GPL "Squash Balls" Update...

by Murray Shield » Mon, 23 Jul 2001 21:42:25

Since adding the squash balls to my MS FF Wheel brake pedal (as mentioned in
a previous post) I have tahen a second off my Mexico time, several seconds
off of the 'Ring and beatin my Watkin's Glen time yet AGAIN (and these are
the only tracks I have spent time on sice). With the 'Ring, I beat my
previous time after doing one (and only one) lap!

Amazing how two little pieces of *** can change the feel so much and make
such a change to lap imes!

Has anyone done this with the Logitech FF GP pedals??

I don't know. But doing this sacrifices some of the pedal travel. I would
suggest that the OLD Logitech FF pedals had far too little travel for this
to be successful...

Just get a squash ball and try it. Or anything else spongy/***y It's not
like it's gonna cost you a fortune (unless you break your pedals, of
course)!

I have a squash ball instead of the break spring in my 'old' logitech,
and it is a huge improvement imo. The short travel is not a problem
at all. The short travel on the throttle on the other hand is something
I still can't get used to. So compared to my old (broken and returned)
guillemot, the brake is a lot better and the throttle is a lot worse :-)

Surpises me that it works, but cool!

Use a joystick and watch your times drop even further.

I can't even do a lap without crashing using a joystick, never mind
improving my best lap time !

I wrapped some foam *** around the pedal 'shaft' then wrapped the whole
lot in duct tape.  Limits the travel a little, but feels much better than
the original.

Cheers

GPL "Squash Balls" Update...

can you beat a 1.17 around monza in f1rc which my pal did on a
keyboard?  my best keyboard time is about 1.18.5 (i have the ghost)
and my best wheel time is 1.19.3 (or .2, i forget).

unfortunately, my times involve some *heavy* kerb-riding for the first
chicane, so i am not too proud of it.  the game does not consider it
an 'invalid lap', but i guess I do.

back to your statement, which joystick do you use / recommend.  i used
to love my old CH Flightstick for Indycar.  What is a good one to get
today?  Also do you use the joystick for all inputs or do you use a
pedal or something else?

Regards all,

GPL "Squash Balls" Update...

 hi Muzza
Glad you like the squash ball trick, I've been using it on my MSFF pedals
for about a year now and can't drive GPL without one now.

Any way I recently found another tweak for the MSFF pedals which makes
nearly as much difference, I noticed when calibrating that GPL didn't seem
to be using the full travel of the pedals, i.e. when you push down either
pedal the calibration goes from 64 down to 0 but you still have about 1cm of
travel before the pedals right down.

I decided to investigate further and got the same results in N3, N4 and
DXTweak so I pulled my pedals apart to check out the pots, and it turns out
that the pots only use about the centre third of there rotation. I haven't
been able to find any replacement pots yet, partly because I haven't tried
that hard :) any partly because the pots Microsoft use are completely blank.

So I decided to try building up the little *** block behind the pedals so
that they only travel as far as there usable range, it turned out to be a
little under 1cm but both pedals were slightly different. Well what a
difference it made, I can modulate the throttle properly now, before if I
wanted to lift of just a little bit I needed to lift of by a cm before I
could lift by that little bit (I think that's what I mean).

I also now use a whole squash ball under my brake pedal now without it
affecting the pedal range anymore than the other mod did.

GPL "Squash Balls" Update...

I don't have a recommendation. I always use a wheel (just bought a new
Ferrari FF two weeks ago). I was referring to a recent thread where a guy
(dc) said he dropped his GPL rank from a +80 to a -1 in four days by
switching to a joystick. Other hotshoes use a stick as well. Even if I was a
bit faster with a stick, I'd stay with a wheel. It just wouldn't feel right
to me not use one.

My best wheel time at Monza is a 1:19 from April 1 in expert mode. Haven't
run it much since then because I usually follow the season schedule.

Murray,
check out my webpage, I use a doorstopper plus a stupid simple resistor cirquit.
Works wonders.
