First Impressions of GP3 (the Full Release version!)

by Some Call Me Ti » Sat, 29 Jul 2000 04:00:00

After 4 years of waiting GP3 landed on my doorstep at 9:30 this morning and
I've now been playing it for over an three hours. Here are my first
impressions:-

a) the menus are practically unchanged from GP2 (which is not a bad thing)

b) The graphics test your system for performance and set an appropriate
detail level (set mine to max at 1280x1024 on a PII 600 and GeForce DDR) but
again all settings you can change are almost identical to GP2.

c)The graphics are nice and do the job but are not exactly state of the art.
GPL still looks better and that came out two years ago.

d) Shock Horror ! you cannot use split axis peddles! this is criminal! Even
F1 2000 can use a split axis.
Again the joystick set-up screen is exactly the same as GP2. Geoff what
exactly have you been doing for the past four years?

d)The way the car drives is very similar to GP2 but now at least the***pit
move about a little as a visual cue.

e) The Force Feedback not exactly up to GPL! Hit a wall and you feel
nothing,
run over the grass and you feel nothing, run over the curbs and you feel
nothing. It's quite weighty it shakes it's head about in a disconcerting
manner but doesn't give out much in the way of "feel". There were many
complaints about the poor FF in F1 2000 but this is not as good as that. Bit
of a
disappointment really.

f) Driving around Monaco just seems a little too easy even with all the help
off
(apart from traction help without which you just spin instantly with no
warning), then again I have been playing GPL rather a lot recently.

g) Tried a wet race at Spa and the rain is just brilliant. Much more
difficult to drive in the wet (as it should be) and don't even think about
turning traction help off unless you are a cobbler. The reflections in the
track and the spray are really very nice.

h) The manual even has the same diagrams as in GP2 and even GP1.

I) The desktop icon is quite nice.

I've only been playing for an hour so I'm not going to make any real
judgements let but so far after all the e***ment and anticipation I feel a
little let down by Geoff Crammond. I can't exactly see what he's been doing
for the last four years apart from doing rain dances. So far I'm not that
impressed (although the rain is rather nice). Geoff
seems to have been in a time warp as GP3 looks and feels like it should have
come out two years ago. If you check out the about GP3 screen the you'll see
the credits which show that only four people including Geoff worked on it
and I'm afraid it shows. No wonder it's not really progressed in four years.

Overall it seems to be exactly like GP2 but with rain and slightly better
graphics. I loved GP2 and I'll certainly have some fun racing in GP3  but
somehow I think I'll be returning to GPL sooner rather than later for my
driving fixes as GP3 just isn't in the same
league. There again that's pretty much what I expected.

At the current costs here in Switzerland, buying GP3 costs the same as
seeing 4 movies in the theatres.  Will I get 8 hours of enjoyment out of it?
Yeah, I'm sure I will, so I ordered it.

Of course, the leader in giggles/monetary unit still must be GPL on budget
release.

After looking at Gp 2.5 it should have been patched in less than 6 months.  4
years for this is a big JOKE!!!  Time for Crammond to leave and get someone else
to create a proper F1 sim.  Ubisoft's third release in the fall should have no
problem beating Gp3.

[sarcasm on]
And let me guess, the full release store-bought version looks
and plays completely different than the rip and iso that were
released earlier this week/last week?  After all, those file
dates were doctored and could very easily have been a pre-
release early beta or something!
[sarcasm off]

sorry.....had to do it.....

Don't worry about the lack of 3-axis support. It's officially a bug that
Hasbro have promised to release a patch to fix.

What was it that was said in here about Crammond?  Oh yes , now I
remember.  Crammond would never release a product with all these flaws
like the 8 week old beta code!!! LOL!!!  Lot of people on this Ng here
looking a little foolish these days.

I've now been playing it practically all day and can now switch off the
traction help (I changed the accelerator sensitivity up from 5% to 10%) in
the dry at any case. Someone has said that they're going to patch the split
axis "bug" (I guess in GP4 in another 4 years time)

The more I play it the more I like it but it's still no GPL.

I've also tried it on my second machine (yes I've got two for network play)
but it's really really slow (its a k6-2 412 with 2 voodoo 2's)

Of course, only 2 people are working on World Sports Cars, and so far it
looks like it will be an amazing sim (based mostly on screenshots and what
the West bros. have said of course, wheres the demo?!)

Did they?  We've read that they know it exists and that the source
"expects" a patch....  Never read that Hasbro is working on a patch....

A bug is an imperfect piece of coding that causes unexpected things to
happen when running a program. The total exclusion of a fundamental feature
hardly qualifies. This is simply shoddy  laziness.

It is a bug.  Joystick B in the configuration screens refers to the
SECOND physical joystick port in your system, which requires a PDPI
card or similar.  If you have 2 joystick ports and can plug your
pedals into the second port, split axis works fine.

The fix, which should be simple, is to make Joystick B access the 3rd
and 4th axis of the first port.

How do you know it will be patched. I just heard that MPS was
aware of the problem. That in and of itself does not guarantee
a patch.

The problem is that the game obviously isn't sophisticated enough to
actually use the split axis (independent pedals).  Big deal, it will be
patched so you don't have to go into your controller control panel every
time you play GP3 (thank you), but we won't have independent pedal action.

Marc.
