Rally 2000: arcade? Gimme a break...

by Jeroe » Tue, 23 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Some people say this game is an arcade game. Well, after trying my first
rally I know one thing for sure: arcade drivers will HATE this game! In
simulation mode it's FAR from easy. After the first race (I almost ended up
3rd, but near the finish I crashed and I couldn't get into reverse soon
enough, so I ended up 8th) I was full of hope. I thought this would be an
easy ride. No victory, but top 10 for sure. After the second stage I was
18th... I did't have enough time to repair all I wanted. Did the best I
could and started the 3 stage. After finishing that one as 58th I was taken
out of the rally: my car didn't pass the test... (One great thing: you can
proceed to the next rally! No need to finish high, which I always hated in
CMR!)

Everyone knows arcade drivers hate long races. Well, some of these RC2K
babies will keep you occupied for more than half an hour. And they hate
having to fiddle around with setups (they may be simple, but they really do
have effect!)
I'd like to see one of these GPL wimps finish any RC2K rally as first. As
far as gameplay goes, this game needs a lot more dedication than the average
arcade game. Sim or no sim, it's great. It's hard (not that THAT makes any
game a sim!) and it's beautifull. I'm glad a crash into a tree doesn't end
the rally (like in real life) because in that case I would never ever finish
in the top 10 (or finish at all!) IMHO Mag Fields did the right thing with
this damage stuff. And they made a beautiful game that will keep anyone who
plays it busy for months.

Anyway, I wish everyone would stop moaning about sim or no sim. Who the hell
cares! You like a game or you don't like a game. Sim or not. As if playing
sim makes you a better person! Don't make me laugh. Playing 'sims' only
seems to make people smug. Even a sim is a game, for crying out loud. Even
GPL fanatics are just simple people, doing nothing more than moving pixels
around a flat screen with a fake wheel! Let's keep things in proportion,
please.

Hm, maybe we can start a new usenet group called rec.autos.games...

This paragraph kills all possible argument.

Please remember that this newsgroup is called "rec.autos.simulators".  It
covers all possible forms of racing simulators, even including arcade games.
If you read the charter or the FAQ you would see that.  The last thing you
want is to have all the newsgroup on your back calling us GPL wimps. It is
totally immature and shows no class.  Stop taking this seriously.

From the reports I see, you need to seperate and learn WHO actually posts
those messages.  There is some people who give very accurate reviews, some
others who are very emotionnal in their messages, etc...  Learn to deal with
those people.  The majority of people here have accepted that GPL is the
best racing sim bar none.

And from the replies here, people DO say that RC is a sim.  It's just not as
a sim as we would had wanted it to be.

Ah, but maybe they just used an over-hyped AI to make it artificially
difficult to win the first time out.  Now GPL on the other
hand... oh... wait... :)

Yes, I *know* that those little GPL automatons really do turn their fast
laptimes.  I've seen virtual Clark flash by me enough times.

You're absolutely right. I apologize (boy, a lot of apologizes lately in
relation to RC2000 :-). This was a bit over the edge and unnecessary. I guess
I'm one of those people who get a bit emotional in their messages. The problem
is: you can't see the smile on my face with which I write (most of my) my
messages. I have to say, I like to put things a little harsh or sarcastic or
whatever on purpose every now and then, just to spice things up and to see what
reaction I get. Indeed, you could call that 'totally immature'. But it's also
true that yuo need to learn WHO posts a message. Anyway, I'll try to better my
life, be more accurate, polite and caring and act my age. I'm 38 (and 'still'
nuts about computer games!), for crying out loud!!! :-)

To avoid confusion: the apology message was really send by me, Jeroen, not Jo Bo.
I'm not Jo Bo! I'm Jeroen! The one and only. I typed that message on another
computer at work, that's how.

Oh come on, at least think of something new for a reply... ;^)

BTW, if my comments are smart-ass, I couldn't say publically what
yours are!
