Strange Behaviour of GPL in XP

Hi all,

Just begun trying out my sims under Win XP Pro and am finding a few
problems with GPL. I still use my trusty V5 5500 so this may be the
problem but I am unable to use glide anymore and have to go for D3D.
This is no great problem other than the drop in framerates at the
start of a race(down to around 30 now instead of a steady 36).
However, has anybody else with a V5 and XP managed to run GPL under
glide.

Secondly and the main problem is that although the sim seems to run
fine I am finding that if at any time I go to a replay it completely
screws everything up. I go back to the race and unpause it but the
screen is almost frozen still or at best running at around 1fps. The
only thing to do at this point is to abandon the race but even this
takes forever. Each key press seems to take about 30 seconds or so to
register. Eventually I can get out of GPL and back to my desktop and I
can then restart GPL with no ill effects but it is a little
frustrating not being able to use the replay features. Anybody else
find this or have any ideas.

I know the V5 is going to be a problem for me but I really can't
afford an upgrade at the moment and it works superbly for GPL under
Win ME. I do still have an old TNT2 card which came with my previous
PC so would this be likely to have less problems under Win XP than the
V5 despite being the older card.

Any and all advice would be really appreciated.

I really like XP but it looks as though I may have to stick with ME
for GPL unless these problems can be solved.

I have also had to dig out my old Thrustmaster F1 wheel due to the
MSFF and LWFF not working for me under XP.

TIA

Which V5 drivers are you using, the beta drivers for XP ?

Just using the ones XP installs itself (including the latest update).
I have also tried some drivers from http://www.falconfly.de/3dfx.htm
but they are really flaky on my system and still exhibit the same
problem, plus some other strange effects like a rippling screen in
3DFX or D3D.

Peter,

What sound card are you using? GPL runs on XP for me with an Nvidia card,
but it sounds terrible. I have a SoundBlaster Live card.  Creative has
drivers for the 5.1 series, but my card is a little older than that.

Anyway, does yours sound OK?

There are glide drivers available for XP but It's hit & miss as to what
titles they work with, unfortunately GPL is a miss due (I'm told) to refresh
rates and how XP handles the transition to glide. Hopefully there will be a
stable glide version in the near future, I'll continue to dual boot with 98
until that...and a few other things get sorted out.

The only way I found to fix the SBLive/GPL sound problem is reducing
'Hardware acceleration' a few notches in sound properties.
