NVIDIA to Acquire 3dfx Interactive
12/16/00 8:23:02 PM

WOW, what a turn of events?  Would be nice if the merger would make the
Geforce support GLIDE (for the older games like Nascar2-3, GPL, MTM, MCM,
viper, and others)wouldn't it?  Alas, but I bet (like you bet) that it
won't happen.

Invidia. com has the announcement also...

so much about which would be better V5 or geforce huh?

There has already been numbers of discussions about this in the NG (check
out the date of the news, December 16th).  Basically it's a step forward,
but NVidia somehow monopolise the market like 3dfx did back 3-4years ago.
The cycle will hopefully change to a more diverse list of *** cards.  All
new implanted technologies (the advent of the Soundblaster card, the battle
for 56kbps modems, CD-Rom compatiblity, etc..) since a decade have suffered
major problems in their implementation.

3dfx were only the victims of their own success.  I still prefer openGL over
any of that ***that is called "Direct3d".  UGH talk about an overwashed
and bland rasterizer.

This news is really old now :)

Anyway, it's not a merger.  To be totally accurate, 3dfx sold assets to
nVidia, like the 3dfx/Voodoo brand-names and their chip technology/patents.
3dfx still exist as a company, but the directors have recommended to the
shareholders that the company close it's doors.

(btw, 3dfx were dropping Glide support for their next product range anyway,
and nVidia have no intention of reviving it either.  3dfx stopped developing
Glide after release 3, which was quite a while ago now.)
