GPL Mega Monster Setup Question

by badg » Thu, 22 Apr 1999 04:00:00

I just purchased my second 12 meg monster 3D card.  I could not find
the procedure on  diamonds web page as instructed in the pamplet.

I placed the card  in the next slot and connected it with the provided
jumper.  When the computer rebooted, it was recognized by the machine.

I don't seem to be getting any added benefit.  Could someone please
tell me what accelerator settings I should be trying?

I got good performance with one card but thought I could increase the
resolution with two cards and maintain the same frame rate.  I haven't
been able to tweek this yet.

I typically get a frame rate of 20 when sitting on the line with 19
cars running most of the eye candy.  By the time we are to the first
turn the frame rate would be up to or approaching 36.

I don't seem to be able to improve on this with the second card and
same config.

I have a 400 PII, matrox card with 16 meg, the two above mentioned
3dfx cards and 128meg memory.

What should I be able to get out of this setup?

Thanks, Bob Agee

GPL really isn't a fill-rate limited app, so you'll likely see little
(if any) improvement with the addition of the second Voodoo2.

Unfortunately GPL does not take advantage of your 24meg (40?) of video
memory.
A hercules thriller 8 meg gets me 26+ on the grid and 36 before second
gear with all graphics on at 800x600. Papy sims were originally written
for rendition chips.

As long as you've got a reasonable Voodoo 2 card, the limiting factor I've
found is pure processing GRUNT...like, I WANT MORE OF IT!!!
I've got an AMD K62-300 and get a tidy 36fps in testing, anywhere, with
everything (except spec lighting) on a 640x480....HOWEVER...even the SNIFF
of an AI car and BABOOOOM....flickering to 25 fps

My money's being saved for a CD Writer at the moment, so no chance of an
upgrade, but one can dream!!
