Toca2 Help!

by Jay » Wed, 10 May 2000 04:00:00

Hi,

I've had Toca2 for quite some time now, and it's worked just fine with
my Riva TNT1 16 meg AGP card (STB Velocity 4400)

However last week I experienced a system crash, and had to start over
from scratch (reformat HD and re-load windows, etc).

Since then whenever I run Toca2 using my TNT card it locks up.
Sometime in the menu, sometimes in the demo, sometimes in the game
(usually not very far into the game mind you).

However If I use my Voodoo II 12 meg PCI card, it works just fine.
I'd much rather use my TNT card, due to AGP, more RAM and better
quality with higher FPS.

I've tried several drivers including STB's and Nvidia's Reference ones,
but no luck.

Can anyone provide any help here? I'm afraid I'm gonna***up my
system again with all the lock-up's and having to turn the power off in
order to get out of the lockup, which of course Windows hates!!!

Thanks in advance for the help!!!!
Jay J

Don't suppose you're using an AMD are you? Exactly the same happened to me,
when defragging once...I tried everything. Finally, I tried the AMD fix, and
a utility called Powertweak, which costs $15, and it sorted it out. It's a
D3D problem, apparently...I battled for months with it, but Powertweak
sorted it out.

Actually I'm running an Intel PII 266 on a LX440 Micronics Motherboard
(2.5 year old system) but now that you mention that's it's a DirectX
problem, that kinda makes sense.

Ya see, i've been expriencing the very same problem with Tomb Raider
II, and Rally Masters! Both of those games run fine with my VII 1000,
but will lock up with the darn TNT card!

I've tried removing and reinstalling the drivers and DirectX (i'm
running DX7a) but no luck :-(

When my system crashed and I reloaded Win98se the first version of
DirectX I loaded was DX7.0a, rather than loading DX5, then DX6, and
then going to DX7. You don't suppose that would make a difference do
you???

Thanks again for the help!

Also Make sure you've installed the AMD AGP miniport Driver and not the
windows default one...

Toca2 Help!

I'm afraid I'll have to defer to the tech wizards in this group
now...anything I say is only from my "hit and hope" method. I have Win98 SE,
for example, and Dx7a, whicm I'm pretty certain is ok to install from
scratch, but as I say, others should jump in any second now. Definite D3D
problem, though, if some games run ok (those that use Rendition, Glide or
whatever) and those that use D3D (Toca, McRae, GP500, etc) don't.
 Sorry I can't help more...

Well, it shouldn't matter whether you had a previous version of Direct X on.
Try going into c:\program files\directx\setup and run dxdiag.exe and see if
the DirectDraw and Direct3D tests are sucessful on your TNT.

What drivers are you using?

I've tried the STB 1.60 and Nvidia Detonator 2.08 and 2.53 drivers.

I just downloaded the newest Detonator drivers from Nvidia last night,
2.68 I believe? and will give them a shot tonight, but I did notice an
invalid page fault error in module DANIM.DLL which appears to be part
of Direct X.

I am wondering if a refresh of Windows and then a clean reinstall of
DirectX might not help. Will give that a try tonight as well.
