Paul:
I have made about 5 different sets of Wheel - Pedals to date.
The best feel that I have been able to achieve has come from using a 6
or 7 inch pulley attached to the steering shaft with the take-up line,
or curtain cord run through holes bored through the pulley such that the
string passes through parallel to the floor. I attach window weights to
each end of the string. The cord runs through one more set of pulleys
outboard of the steering shaft. When you turn the wheel in this
configuration, you are lifting both weights as you pull off center.
This provides good resistance, good on-center feel, and very positive
return to center. I tried various combinations of springs and motorcycle
steering dampners, but always had a twitchy, springy feel to the wheel.
Working against the mass of the window weight takes out a bunch of the
propensity to not have "still hands" while going down the straights at
Monza at 205.
I run GP2 at monza with 2 degrees on center slop, 10 degrees lock and
no other helps (1:23's). I run ICR2 at Laguna Seca with 15 degrees lock,
linear (1:09's) . I run Sears Point at 22 degrees lock, linear (92's).
If you have any interest, I'll try to post you a drawing.
