Sound popping in GPL

I have a Dell P2-400 with the Turtle Beach Montego sound card.  My sound
periodically cracks and pops in GPL and I am not sure what to do.  In my
app.ini I have this line:

[ Sound ]
soundQuality = 2                                ; Relative quality for sound

I have 12 as the number of sounds in Options.  What is the difference in
quality if I set soundQuality to 0 or 1?  Is 12 too high a number of
sounds in options?  BTW - I usually drive the Ferrari, if that makes a
difference...

David, I have the same system and get the occasional pops, too.

I haven't played around too much with the sound settings.  I did reduce
the number of sounds from 12 to 4 or 5 in an attempt to get a good frame
rate for VROC.  I still get the pops with that setting.  Don't remember
offhand what my sound quality setting is (and I'm at work).  The Ferrari
has nothing to do with the pops.  I get them with all the cars I
believe.  The Ferrari's sound is slightly distorted, however.

By the way, do you get the shakes with your drivers' hands?  I haven't
been able to reduce them much, and I'm wondering if it's the TB Montego
game port's problem.

David,

I get the popping in Ferrari as well, especially when under heavy
power.  I get it whether I use soundquality of 2 or 0 (the 0 I use to
help framerate on my modest 233 processor and old ISA sound card).  I
don't notice it in other makes of vehicles.

The further you go, the less the shakes.  I also calibrate everytime I
start the sim.  I think this is necessary with the TBS Montego.  I
haven't checked lately for new drivers.  Guess I'll do that now.

Sliding the slider to non-linear is like cutting your nose off to spite your
face.  Do you see the jittering in the control panel calibration and test
screens?  I get the shakes to a small extent with a Thrustmaster Nascar Pro
on a SB Live!, to a greater extent with a SB PCI 128, and to an even greater
extent with a Saitek R4 on either card.  It very well may be the sound card
game port, but you are not alone.

Marc.

Alan... I have the same setup hardware-wise. Does a quality of 0 help
the framerate at all? How much?

Thanks,
Dave

I use this setting and it gives about 3-5 fps improvement. With my p200mmx I
need all the frames I can get :-)
