The interviews with Garner were great during the Making of Grand Prix,
and Frankenheimer was great as well. Can't stand the 'Grand Hotel'
approach as Frank' called it; when Speedvision showed GP last year I
recorded the making of and then just the race portions of the movie
without the melodrama. [DVD is good for that too]
Le Mans was the opposite- no Hollywood story at all there, just great
race footage. Almost a documentary with an actor inserted into scenes.
I loved the story in the 'making of' where Frankenheimer was told that
a reviewer in a car mag said Le Mans was a racing movie and Grand Prix
was a soap opera!
Frankenheimer's love of cars is evident, though; Ronin had amazing
chase scenes in it.
A couple of others I would like to get are Winning, which I have not
seen in years, and even Bobby Deerfield, which was on Classic Sports
recently, which I have never seen but would like for the race footage
as well.
Le Mans seems to be the only movie that did not try to shoe-horn a
melodrama into it.
