What's up with UniVBE?

A couple of people have posted that when running UniVBE with N2 a black
box appears on their screens throughout the game and then also appears in
Windows after exitting the game.  The only way to get rid of this box is
to re-boot.  I have the same trouble, only it goes a little further.  I
am running a P5-166 XL, 16MB RAM, Matrox Vid Card w/2 MB.

With UniVBE installed I get  23-24 FPS with all graphics on except
asphalt/grass, 10 cars in front, 2 behind, and 2 heard.  But that damn
black box usually blocks out part of the dash.  So I tried running N2
without UniVBE installed.  The box disappeared but my FPS dropped to 19-
20.  Even if I were willing to accept this drop (which I'm not), I
developed another problem.  While racing, my car would pause every 20
seconds or so.  This pause would last for a second or two.  During the
pause I could still hear my engine.  The pause is not like the choppy
effect you get with a low FPS.  The car just stops  I wouldn't say the
game froze because I could still hear my engine revving.  The N2
installation guide says UniVBE is not compatible with all vid cards and
may cause the game to lock up.  There is no mention of this black box.
It also doesn't explain why the car pauses on me when UniVBE is not
installed.  That black box is very annoying, but the pausing is even
worse.  Both situations make N2 very difficult to play.  Anyone have any
suggestions besides installing a new vid card.  I only want to try that
as a last resort.

Thanks,

Tim
