Does anybody use surround sound ("5.1") with GPL? If so, is it any good?

Cheers!

I have plugged my Soundblaster Live value, into my surround system, (digital
ut to digital in).
Sound is great, but I usualy use head phones (stereo).

For headphones + sorround look at:

Something almost as good: use digital sound (the SPDIF output on a Live!
card): no hiss, no artifacts, huge dynamic range...but--sadly--GPL's sound
has slipped way behind what's good today (Ghost Recon, f'rinstance).

I have an SBLive, which has two outputs, but I can't seem to get 2 different
speaker sets to play at the same time.  Not sure why...

I know.  one output (green, I believe) is the "regular" output.  the
second output (black?) is for the rear speakers in a surround system.

if you want them both to make noise you need to set "4 speakers" in
the speaker config, and place the fader in the middle.  I imagine you
also need to make sure your apps aren't producing surround.

How do you get it to work, I can never get any sound when I select it,
or maybe I need new sound card drivers.

I have a Diamond Aureal Mx300 sound card (pretty old now, but still good)
and a set of Hercules 5.1 Speaker setup (5 speakers and subby).

GPL is pretty good now with base, but there isn't much surround sound as
such.  I'm not sure if it is because, originally my Sound card didn't come
with dolby compatible output, but now in Windows XP there is a setting for
dolby 5.1 output and selecting that makes it sounds superb.

But no surround support as such.

Nascar 2002 on the other hand......... WOOOOAAA!!  :(0)

Oh so it needs to be a REAL 4-speaker system, not just 2 different sets?  That
sucks...  I'll have to wait for a while for that - no money.

I have used it with 2 different sets of speakers, you just have to
tell the Creative software, you do have it installed right? that you
have 4 speakers instead of 2.

Since I've never used(or seen) a surround sound 'system', I thought there might
have been wiring that was different than just using 2 seperate sets...

Oh, no shi- erm, no kidding?  I deleted the creative software, as it caused too
many problems.  Hmm, I'll have to do some more testing...  Thanks.

I just got a set of Creative Labs, Cambridge Soundworks FPS-2000 4
channel Digital speakers for my SBLive!. They have a digital plug,
that I can not figure out what it does, except keep sound from going
to the speakers, and then a front and rear connection that plug into
the front and rear chanel on the SBLive!. THey sound great and I got a
set of refurbs from Creative for about 50% off list price.
