10 fps with a P150+millenium ???

by z.. » Thu, 14 Aug 1997 04:00:00

Well, i got these new machines at work, and they can't
run my main application (gp2..).

Its a Gateway P150 + Millenium card + SB16.
Everything (video/scsi hd/ect) is from GW except for
the sound blaster which we added ourself. Everything
works fine under DOS and NT. Moving to gp:

a) I try to setup sound. It autodetects SB, but locks up
when  i try to test the sound. I disable the sound.

b) I run gp2. I get 10 fps with full graphics. I turn everything
off, i get maybe 15.

c) I move to an identical  Gateway machine with no SB. Gp2
locks on startup (i dont even get the starting screen).

Help!
Right now, it looks like these machines are going back to GW!!

Everything seems normal to me! When the 400mhz machines hit the stores,
maybe then we can run GP2 with everything turned on.

what do you have the fps set at in the grafx menu?

I found that when I set the fps at 10 it would limit the fps at 10.  I
assumed that if i set it at 10 and it coud draw, say, 20 then it would
do so.  But gp2 does not do this.  I thought something was wrong with my
cpu but that was not the case.  Your problem sounds some what simular to
mine.

I thought that GW2K stopped selling P150's several months ago? Come to
think of it Intel stopped manufacturing those chips quite some time ago!
You sure these machines are new? ;-))

You mention NT - are you trying to run GP2 from within NT? If so, I'm not
surprised at your problems. NT was never designed to run DOS games which
typically make direct calls to the hardware.

If you are running from pure DOS (i.e. you've got a dual boot setup & can
boot into good old DOS 5 or 6.x) then, sorry, can't think of anything
obvious from the information provided.

Is the video card one of the original Milleniums or a Millenium II? Or
maybe even a Mystique? Have you checked with Matrox's web site that
you've got the latest bios - GW2K often ship old ones with their systems.

My GW2K P133 could quite happily get 21fps at most tracks in SVGA (most
graphic details turned off though) so you should be able to do rather
better than 15!

Cheers,
Richard
