OT puter upgrade

Need advice here guys.  My p3 600   abit be6-11 combo fried itself the other
day.  I'm now running a cellery 300 on  a biostar m6tba combo.(its my old
system)   now I'm on a tight budget here.  need some recommendations on
processor  and m/b.  I'm basically playing gpl (of course) and f12k1.  I'm
looking at a 1gig or slightly higher cpu (like I said, on a tight budget)
any advice would be greatly appreciated

Just upgraded to ECS K7S5A mboard and Duron 1200. Significant upgrade for
about AUD320 (plus memory and other things that don't fit in new mainboard).
I've turned everything on with GPL and get 36 fps steady.

Still, I'm not happy as my GPL pace didn't move accordingly

Any idea what got cooked? The reason I ask is more for what you can save out
of the old system. Assuming your loking for the big 3 (mobo, CPU, ram) IMO
your best bet would be a Socket A AMD setup with pc133 ram. Check out
www.newegg.com for parts. I just use the Shuttle AK12A mobo from them with a
1.4 T-bird and the only problem I had was it didn't like my Linksys network
card. The nice part was its only $64. I already had the chip but I bought a
boxed XP1800 from them for $159 so I would think a 1.2 T-bird or XP 1500
would be in your range. I'm not sure what video card you have but I'm
runnnig it with a GeforceMX and a SB Live MP3. This is just the girlfriends
system so its not a real *** box but all the "***" pieces (VIA mobo,
Geforce, SB Live) were used toogether and it does run fine in my testing.

The Duron has my vote for best value processor, especially if you
intend to keep your PC100 memory.  My only reservation in recommending
AMD is heat.  At 1 GHz, the Duron draws about twice as much power as a
Celeron, which means a louder fan to keep it below 50 C.  It's cheaper
and faster, but hotter.  You should be able to find a decent KT133A
motherboard at closeout prices.

If you find some more money in the couch, consider DDR133 (aka
PC2100), a low-end Athlon XP, and a KT266A board.  Once again, my only
reservation in recommending such a package is heat.  The slowest
Athlon XP draws around 60 W.  You'll have a hard time cooling a system
like that quietly.

Start at newegg.com for components (6.6 out of 7 at
resellerratings.com).  If you're considering a memory upgrade, start
at crucial.com.

XP are easier to cool than Durons and TBirds as they run cooler.

At the same clock speed, they run cooler, but not by much.  Here is
AMD's advertised typical and maximum dissipation, in watts, of the
Duron, Athlon Thunderbird, and Athlon XP:

        Duron     TB     XP
  1000  42/46  50/55
  1100  46/50  54/60
  1200  50/55  59/66
  1300  55/60  61/68
  1333         62/70  54/60
  1400         65/72  56/63
  1467                57/64
  1533                59/66
  1600                61/68
  1667                63/70

The slowest XP is still hotter than the 1 GHz Athlon C I bought a year
ago.  By comparison, the fastest Celeron and P3 dissipate less than 40
W.  The 2.2 GHz P4 is around 55 W, comparable to the Athlons.

Ok thanks a lot guys for the info.  I've got a starting point now what to
look at, and convince the wife I need to spend.
It looks like the m/b and cpu both fried.  strange. there was no power

everything else is fine.  I just pulled out the m/b and put the old one in,
slid in the ram, and put my old i740 vid card in, and away she went.
unfortunately, my gforce mx200 doesn't work with the m6tba :-(

again thanks for the info
