Download Manager - Which One?

Download Manager - Which One?

by Rudebo » Wed, 07 Jan 2004 04:28:08

Lately I've been having more and more problems with downloads*** on me.
(Took about 20 tries to get ITC'96)  I have cable so I don't really need
more speed just something that can reconnect etc.  There seems to be a
thousand out there and from my brief perusal of forums many are rife with
hidden ad and spyware.  Any suggestions for a simple, small free/shareware
download manager that is  not hiding spyware?

TIA

The one I use and like is FreshDownload. It's freeware and has no spyware.

With a cable connection to the internet I would say you don't need a
download manager.  You should instead be looking into what is happening to
your throughput.  How often do you unplug your cable modem?  Try it.  Check
your firewall as well for any traffic you cannot account for, you may have
some spyware or adware on your system that is causing the hangs, even worse
a trojan.  This is all supposition as you have only stated that downloads
hang.

I agree 100%....dont go looking for a utility ...do the wiser thing and sort
out your cable connection.

I have a mate who had problems with his cable connection but as the previous
poster said a little effort sorted him out and he has never stopped thanking
me since ;)

I don't think it's the cable connection because it consistently happens
on particular sites.  And it's the same on two different computers on two
totally different cable accounts (work and home).

I can download 30 MB from Blackhole or SpeedSims in a minute or two
every time.  But places like DrivingItalia or M4driving are fairly fast but
often hang mid download numerous times till I get it.  Part of it is my
fault in that it's often new big mods that have been just released, so me
and everyone's dog are trying to download at the same time.  This is part of
the problem but not exclusively. I'm sure there are some sites that have
slow, spotty servers and that the problem is on that end not with me.  Not
that I'm complaining, I appreciate anyone who creates great things and gives
me an opportunity to download them.  It just frustrates me when I've got 170
MB of a 200MB file and it craps out. I just thought it would be more
efficient for me and everyone else if I could use the 170MB and reconnect to
the end instead of junking that 170MB and starting from scratch.

I get 2.2Mbit on my cable and still use a download manager.

It's faster and if for whatever reason, the servers "hicup", it
will resume automatically without worries.

I recommend Flashget.

Good luck......

Yeah, but the seem to be into collecting email addresses.  I'll find it
somewhere though :)

Netvampire.com worked well for me. Don't know if it contains adware
but Lavasoft's Adware will find them if it does.

Some other browser than IE that already supports resuming downloads...
