GPL clutch control

Hi All

Having found myself last off the line on so many starts I tried configuring a
button on my steering wheel for clutch control, as described in the supplied
book 'four wheel drift' but I find I can only use it if I select manual gear
changes, is this correct or am I missing something here. At the moment I'm still
using auto gear changes

Cheers

That is correct.
When you choose atomatic shifting you'll also get auto-clutching. So to use
the clutch you need to turn of the shifting help. (Which IMO you'll need to
anyway if you want to stand a chance at the start)

Hi
Looks like I've got to learn manual shifting.

Dont worry.  Its not to hard.  I made the transition in like 2 days.  Well at
every track except the Ring.  I cant make a lap without using Shift-R there
WITH auto-shift.  Try Monza first since theres a minimal amount of gear changes
there.  Soon you'll be driving laps at all the tracks without auto-shift (the
Ring excluded...unless you have an amazing memory).

It doesn't need amazing memory - just a couple of slow trips around
looking at the way one section leads on the the next.  I know how to
drive my car up to London (live about 20miles outside) - or down to
the coast (30 miles the other way) - or to work.  After I've done it a
couple of times I can easily remember the way.  Going round the ring
is just the same.

The only part I had difficulty with was the section after the bit
after the first banked hairpin (I don't know the names of anywhere
round the track but I can remember each bit of road). There are a lot
of short bumpy sections with a right turn at the end and then another
short bit with a left turn and some trees on the right.  There are
four like that almost the same - the first one is harmless almost
straight on, the second is a bit worse, the turns are sharp nothing
more, the third I have to remember is a 1st (maybe 2nd gear) slow left
down hill so not to go in too fast and the last has a sharpish left,
then a right and then a sharp drop round a sharp left turn.  That was
the only bit I had to actually "learn"

Don't let its size put you off - I find it great fun to drive and to
explore each bit seeing were I can gain a bit of time.  I still need a
shift R (often several) on about 80% of the laps - but what the heck!

Once I got GPL on my new PC, I never even TRIED the auto...
I had the demo on a P233 MMX laptop (the only PC we had at the time fast
enough) and soon discovered how stupid the auto is...if you wreck (like all
of us do in my family) it will take FOREVER to find a gear....

Umm....correct me if I'm wrong, but there is isn't usually a clutch in a car
with an automatic transmission.  Not one you activate yourself, anyway.

It isn't that difficult to learn, really. As someone else said, pick
an easy track like Monza in the beginning. Look at the replay included
with the sim to find out what gear your supposed to be in in any given
corner of the track, and try to duplicate this (at slower speeds, of
course :)

The most important points are:

- You have to know always what gear you're in, so you can downshift to
the gear you want without having to look at the shifter position.

- You have to lift the throttle a bit when shifting up. In novice mode
without damage model, it won't make much of a difference. But once you
proceed to the more "realistic" modes, overrevving will kill your
engine. Better learn to change gears the right way now.

- Brake first, downshift later. Again, overrevving is one part of the
problem. Another part is that you will unsettle the car if you
downshift too early.

Have fun!

Hi daxe

Not a clutch as such, but in my automatic car I can select neutral and rev the
engine then put it into gear. That's if I want to break it. ; -)

I'm now running with manual gears and slowly making headway. dropping down the
box has been the hardest to master. but getting about 1.33 at Monza on a good
day.

Just a small point to note here folks. When selection the
automatic for GPL it doesn't to my knowledge fit a
"Automatic Transmission" to the car but rather changes the
gears auotmatically for you. There's a big difference.
If it were a true auto *** the engine tone would be a lot
different and the "get up and go would be" dismal.
