OT (Apologies): Internet Conection Sharing Problem

by Peter Hoope » Sat, 04 Aug 2001 05:14:04

Hi all,

First off apologies for the off-topic post... I have tried to get this
problem resolved with some help from the relevant networking
newsgroups but have drawn a blank there and have always got very good
advice here so decided to give it a go despite recent talk about the
merits of off-topic issues being addressed here.

I have been happily sharing my ADSL connection between 2 computers for
some time but recently removed the network card from my main PC in an
effort to try to trace a problem I had been having. However, now I
have put the card back in place I cannot for the life of me get the
client PC to share the internet connection of the host.

I initially had 'obtain an ip address automatically' selected for the
TCP/IP > network card on both the host and client but this didn't work
at all (although it used to) and I couldn't even ping one pc from the
other. I then tried entering the addresses manually (192.168.0.1 for
the host and 192.168.0.2 for the client). This enables me to
succesfully ping each pc from the other and access each pc's drives
but still won't allow the client to access the internet connection of
the host.

The only thing I have noticed that is different from what used to
happen when it was working is that when I restart the client pc it no
longer asks me for a password when Windows starts up. Apart from that
everything seems the same.

I run Zonealarm for my firewall but have tried without that running
and still get no joy.

I am desperately hoping someone here can offer me some advice as this
is seriously eating into my sim time and with 2 daughters who both
have gotten used to accessing the internet from their pc it is
beginning to drive me potty.

Apologies again for the OT but what's a guy to do when time behind the
wheel begins to disappear down the drain...

TIA

PH

This is just a stab in the dark, but...
When I used ICS I had to use Client for Microsoft Networks as the primary
logon service. It sounds like you are running Windows logon ?
Control panel/ network , primary network logon.

I went through the same thing... I didn't get it resolved until I installed
Sygate's Home Network software.  W-98's ICS is pathetic!  I haven't had a
bit of trouble since going with Sygate two months ago.  They have a 30 day
trial on it - it's worth a shot.

What's wrong with W98's ICS? If you have Win98SE the price is right, at
least. Does Sygate's software offer any advantages? It just seems like such
a basic service. Once you share your Internet connection, what additional
features could you possibly get that would make paying for the software a
better deal.
