check out the new Taladega Fastlaps. SMOKKINU (Dave) clocked off a
196.483 mph lap. Guys, how are we gonna keep up?

you don't understand. this was a qualifying lap, 70 degrees, "NO" wind,
and 22 gallons of fuel. QUALIFYING LAP! you try a qualifying lap with
the above conditions and see how you come out. my personal best is
195.6 mph. I can go 197+ with the draft, but that doesn't matter here,
YOU qualify and let me know how you turn out.

Granted, this speed will probably put you on the pole a good percentage of
the time but it won't beat a 2+ car draft. However, if SMOKKINU can do this
consistantly he probably won't have to deal with the numerous "Lemons" that
will undoubtedly show up at this track.

yeah, the draft definitely does win. I know that. I'm just mainly
talking about keeping up with that kind of time for fastlap. seems like
everyday they're turning in faster and faster lap times at each track.
i wish i had enough time in a day to tweak some setups to improve.
guess i'm happy with where i'm at, but i'm definitely not saying i don't
want to go faster!

Hmm...Let's see here. Uh, actually John, I was aware that this was a
qualifying lap. I guess I didn't get my point across very well. I
apologize.

I do acknowledge the fact that SMOKKINU's qual speed is excellent. But, in
this age of restrictor plate racing, getting the pole at Dega doesn't award
the driver much other than bragging rights. A 2+ car draft will easily
"keep up" and more than likely surpass the best qual speed (at least on N2
anyway). In SMOKKINU'S favor, he won't have to deal with the "lemons" back
in the pack if he qualifies that well consistantly.
As for my personal best qual speed...well...let's just say that SMOKKINU
definitely "smokes" me. However, for what it's worth, I can draft with the
best of them if I'm able to survive the first lap carnage. :-)

Also - I know Taladega is one of THE great racetracks and I love Nascar
as much as I love the British Touring Car Championship, but c'mon guys -
its hardly the ultimate test of a drivers skill (I am aware that you
never said it was). All this running wide open, turning the wheel a
couple of degrees and trying not to fall asleep :} is not nearly so
difficult as a hot lap at Sears Wet or Wet Glen - now that takes some
doing. Mind you, I'd gladly run Taladega all day if only it were
possible to get on Hawaii from here.
Cheers

I'd like to see what would happen if you fell asleep at 200 MPH.They would
be scraping your greasy spot off the track.
