P200 GP2 Advice Requested

by Neil Charlt » Fri, 09 Aug 1996 04:00:00

Hi all,

I am about to take delivery of the following machine in the next few
days:

P200
512k p/b cache
32Mb EDO RAM
Triton VX chipset
Award Bios
2Gb HDD
AWE32pnp
Matrox Millenium 4Mb
17" Ilyama  Vison Master Pro
Thrustmaster T2

I would much appreciate it if anyone currently using such a system
with GP2 could provide any suggestions/warnings/pitfalls before I
begin setting the game up.

Thanks in anticipation

You want warnings? Make sure to turn off the turbo button or everything
(except GP2) will run TOO fast!
You want suggestions? Give the P200 to me and Ill let you keep the rest!
:-)
Oh yeah, I think GP2 will run reasonably fast . (NOT!)

Check with your employer before you set this up.  You may want a 3 month
sabbatical.  Also call you closest none-racing friends and warn them
that you may be unreachable for quite some time.  And if there are any
important tasks you need to do, do them now!  ;-)

Sorry, I can't be of any help since my system can't even shine it's
turbo light next to yours.  This post was purely an attempt to purge my
envy.

Enjoy, you'll have fun!

Michael,

This really wasn't a brag - honest. I've never had a machine even
remotely as well specced as this and I was concerned about bios
settings and whether I'd run into problems with the T2 on the game
port (I'd heard I might need an ACM card whatever that is).

Regarding the boss - not applicable. i'm a teacher currently on **6
weeks** holiday. Now that _is_ designed to provoke envy ;-) I only
play this to keep in tune with my kids you understand.

Regards

You're welcome. You need a 2X speed CD-ROM drive.  ;-)

Find Chris's 3D bench program and benchmark your new toy and post the
results. Those of us searching for the ultimate speed will be
gratefull. Also can you post the GP2 log:on results?

John,

Thanks for the reassuring reply. Am I correct in assuming that there
is a joystick port on the AWE32 and that you use this with no
problems?

Regards.

You really should put that cute little fan *back* on the big processor
chip. And definately do *not* try to fry eggs on an overclocked Pentium.

Well, sort of. Your AWE32 has the dreaded letters "pnp" which I avoid
like the plague. Mine is a "bog standard" AWE32 which has worked with
everything no trouble. My TSW is plugged into it and works without any
problems.

Cheers!
John

"Cute little fan"?!? It's a dirty great power supply fan*** over
the biggest heat sink you've ever seen - we believe in safe overclocking
around here!

As for eggs, yeuch. Sorry, never eaten them. The extra large heatsink
does allow me an extra rasher of bacon in the morning though...

Will do. It's die to arrive in 10 days. I'll post performance data

John,

I'm comitted to the pnp card (no option in the spec). If I'm one of
the first to use it, it might be helpful if I post the results when
the thing arrives.

Thanks again

Just make sure you have your hands on a DOS PnP TSR program so you can
control the card in DOS outside of the Windows environment.  Some
vendors do not include this in the config.sys/autoexec.bat, because they
don't believe anyone will ever be running their systems in pure DOS
environments.  But, they are usually lurking about in the directory for
the PnP card.

John,

Many thanks for this - this is _exactly_ the sort of advance tip I was
looking for.
