I have the exact same problem. I am glad that you posted this as I was
beginning to think that this is a problem specific to my system. My speakers
are definitely hooked up correctly so I know that isn't the problem. What I've
noticed is that if I reverse the headphones, the sound of passing cars seems
properly oriented, but the sounds of hitting the wall or another vehicle
are then switched.
My sound system consists of Yamaha YST-M10 powered speakers and a SBPro.
I tested the game on another PC with a SBPro and a pair of crappy Koss
speakers, and strangely, the phenomenon wasn't nearly as noticeable. Others
have also complained about an ugly "static" sound in the background of the
engine noise. I too am suffering with this annoyance. Funny thing is, once
again, the cheapy Koss speakers did not exhibit the problem to quite the
degree that my speakers do. I read a post on AOL from a guy that had the
static problem and figured that it must be his cheap speakers. He went out and
bought a more expensive pair, and the problem got worse. One would have to
gather from this that a better pair of speakers exposes these sound flaws,
possibly due to the more accurate sound reproduction and better stereo
separation? I don't know, but it sure is perplexing. Now that I've found
someone else that also has this problem, I'm going to contact Papyrus's tech
support and see what they have to say.
I guess the only solution now is to buy a junky pair of speakers. :)
