Problem w/ stereo effects in NASCAR

by Thong P To » Fri, 25 Nov 1994 07:57:15

Does anyone have a problem with NASCAR's stereo effects?  Mine is
reversed.  When I have cars passing me on the right, I hear the sounds in the
left speaker and vice versa.  I thought the problem is the speakers hooked up
wrong, so I plugged in a my headphones into the jack for my SBPro.  But
the stereo effects is still reversed.  I have to flip the headphones around
to get it right.  So, does anyone have this same problem?  If so, how did
you fix the problem?

Thanks,

I have the exact same problem. I am glad that you posted this as I was
beginning to think that this is a problem specific to my system. My speakers
are definitely hooked up correctly so I know that isn't the problem. What I've
noticed is that if I reverse the headphones, the sound of passing cars seems
properly oriented, but the sounds of hitting the wall or another vehicle
are then switched.

My sound system consists of Yamaha YST-M10 powered speakers and a SBPro.
I tested the game on another PC with a SBPro and a pair of crappy Koss
speakers, and strangely, the phenomenon wasn't nearly as noticeable. Others
have also complained about an ugly "static" sound in the background of the
engine noise. I too am suffering with this annoyance. Funny thing is, once
again, the cheapy Koss speakers did not exhibit the problem to quite the
degree that my speakers do. I read a post on AOL from a guy that had the
static problem and figured that it must be his cheap speakers. He went out and
bought a more expensive pair, and the problem got worse. One would have to
gather from this that a better pair of speakers exposes these sound flaws,
possibly due to the more accurate sound reproduction and better stereo
separation? I don't know, but it sure is perplexing.  Now that I've found
someone else that also has this problem, I'm going to contact Papyrus's tech
support and see what they have to say.

I guess the only solution now is to buy a junky pair of speakers. :)

Yeah, "static" noise BIG TIME on my Sony SRS-88 speakers too!  I hope Papyrus
puts out a patch for the stereo problem and the "static" noise problem.

Please post your findings after you talk with their techs.

Thanks,

Thong

As far as the static is concerned, have you tried reseating/cleaning your
card or trying a different slot (preferably the one farthest from the
power supply, but not over the CPU).

It could also be that your volume control pot is causing some of the
noise.  Not much you can do here unless you know how to solder and can
get the same replacement pot.

While you have the card out, take a normal pencil eraser and clean the
gold contacts at the edge of the card by rubbing them with the eraser.
Then seat and reseat the card about 5 times to help clean the slot
contacts.  Before the final seating, clean the card edge again.

This problem has nothing to do with my SB being properly seated, although I
thank you for the tip. I have zero problems with static in other games. The
static is a actually part of the sound sample used for the engine audio. This
static is only present in the engine noise and not elsewhere in the game.
I have read numerous posts now concerning the existence of this annoying
background noise, enough to rule out anything but a flaw in the software
itself.

Well, then try turning down the treble and/or turn up the bass.  Make it
sound how you want it to.
