Where exactly in Berlin was this track located?  And my
other question is does it still exsist.

Leading from the Funkturm in the west straight to the south west, near
lake Wannsee.

It's a public road, and does still exist. The banked north kurve was
destroyed and replaced by a flat turn.
But no more racing there, the farewell event was AFAIR several months
ago. The (wooden) grandstand was declared a monument.
The new Lausitzring is supposed to be a kind of replacement for the
AVUS.

When was that ? I remeber my dad showed me the banked turn when i was in Berlin
in 89. That sight kind of triggered my historic F1 interest, which was really
boosted by GPL :) I still get a weird feeling when thinking of AVUS, so guess
I'm looking forward to Spirit of Speed :)

According to Tracks Around the World :

At that time, Avus still incorporated the steeply banked north bend,
linking two parallel straights (part of the Autobahn); there was a new
flat south curve as the Berlin zonal border cut across the pre-war
track. With the north bend, the lap distance was 5.15miles/8.29km,
less from 1967 (3.030 miles/4.99km).

Thanks a lot for the info.  If I had known that the grandstands were part
of the track I would have taken a picture of them on the bus tour.
Another question is how close did it get to Wannsee, because that is where
I stayed during my trip to Berlin.

If you look carefully you can still see the 'new' south curve on the
carriageway heading out of Berlin:  when I passed it at Easter it was used as a
storage layby for motorway maintanance junk, but the curve was very noticeable
and just like the pictures I have of it.
