N3 How can I open the .car files?

by Burke Well » Sat, 05 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I want to be able to view the individual driver info photos using PSP
(Paintshop Pro), and I assume that the images are within the .car files
found in the cars folder, but I can't figure out how to get to them. I see
that others are editing these images or replacing them with different ones.
How are people doing this? What's the trick to opening those files?

Thanks in advance,

go into n3 and load the car in the driver info.  choose the export
button and it will save a file of the graphic in your N3 directory.
Then edit it as you like, with psp, make sure you don't mess up the
pallette, and save it back to the N3 folder.  Then back into the game
and once again in driver info choose import....

I don't think you can actually get to the driver's picture (I think
that's what you mean...?) you can only replace it with a new one....

Look in the CARS folder - there's a file called DRIVPICT.TGA this is
the one you use to change the picture of the driver that's shown with
the info. Keeping the same size, paste a new picture into it and then
save it with the same name as the .CAR file. If you have a file called
BUBBA69.CAR then your new driver photo would need to be BUBBA69.TGA
then while looking at the info, click on the LOAD TGA and save it....

I haven't tried this, but I had a demo version of PSPro that had a
real nice area capture feature -- if you have that and can use it
while in N3, that would be a good way to edit an existing picture
rather than completely replacing it....
