CMR 4- saves and difficulty

In Colin McRae Rally 4, is there any way to save progress at a given
point, then come back to it?  I'm playing the game, and I got kicked out by
the team because I didn't get 2 points, so I had to start over.  Being able
to save at the beginning of a rally would be helpful- so far it just seems
to auto save (deleting the old save).  Is it suppossed to be like this?

Every single rally becomes a very nerve wracking affair when you could
totally blow the rally with a little mistake.  I know that's "realistic",
but I like games I can play more casually than that (BTW, I replayed the
game and got the points, but still, having to start over whenever you***
up is a downer).  The stages are alot harder than Colin McRae 2, the physics
are ramped up quite a bit, and the roads on the stages are more realistic in
narrowness- meaning it's easier to crash the car and the whole game is a
fine line between really aggressive driving and playing it safe.

I watched a real rally (for the first time, being in the US, I don't see
alot of it, and it usually comes on early in the morning) on satellite TV (a
rally in Argentina) this weekend and it was amazing how many of the cars
were doing great, then bam, they are out of the race because of damage or a
crash.

CMR04 is too realistic for you?  Damn, you'd better steer clear of Richard
Burns Rally in that case.... :-\

A suggestion...........

There are 2 stages between each service point.
When you finish the second stage the game does the save
and then you go onto the service area.
So if you crash or are not happy with your placing, 1st, 2, or 3rd
in the first stage or (second stage if you decide) then start again
for improvement.
It will be safer or less frustrating for you to do well here
than hope to do well the way you have been playing without these
improvement attempts.
