In real life I am sure you needed to shift from 5 to 4 to 3 to 2 and finally
into 1.  That's how the transmission was in 67.

People are working on that. No big deal, still... just camera settings.

They are. Seriously.

Hmm, well, I think debrits aren't modeled on the tyres (sand, grass, etc..)
when your actually back on the track.

Umm, there were no sequential gearboxes in F1 back then.  That's just
how GPL is.  IIRC, sequential gearboxes didn't become the "norm" in F1
until the 88-90 timeframe.  John Barnard was the first to seriously go
after the idea when he introduced the semi-auto box in his '88 Ferrari.

Actually, '89, and it was sequential for the same reason that GPL is - the
semi-automatic box only gave the ability to shift up and down, but not to
select which gear you wanted to be in.  GPL has to take into account the
"semi-automatic" nature of most (all?) available controllers.

I have a nice row of number keys across the top of my keyboard that would
work well for this type of job.  : )

(Of course, these could also be mapped to the programmable buttons on
my wheel too).

Yeesh,  I can imagine the *** streaks I'd leave with
this kind of power at my command! :)

(Who has been known, on occasion,  to push the shift lever on my
T2 wheel set FORWARD to go from fourth to third, just because
that little right hand H pattern graphic is so immersive,
and so well known to my right hand...)
