Thanks.

Let's start over, shall we?  I figured readers in this group would associate
the Bandini crash to GPL and the harsh realities of driving on the edge in a
fashion similar to the way I did, but my feeble mind must have failed me again
:-)

So, with that hopefully out of the way, check out the great F-1 site with lots
of OTHER fantastic movies!  There's a couple of .mov's simulating the new
Indianapolis F-1 addition, and lots of other terrific in-car footage of the
world's hottest hot-lappers showing their stuff!

Todd Wasson  :-)
My apologies to the Bandini family, the Petty family, the Senna family, etc..

Yep, once was enough, but Outlook Express got a bit cranky on me, sorry. But
I still find it ***y amazing that people want to watch a mans death
because its 'educational', but never seem to jump to recommending a site
that charts his career or achievements!

Yes!!  Hehehe!!  The doctor says I'm getting MUCH better now...  With Formula 1
at Indy, I won't be needing as many happy pills...  :-)

(sigh)  I hope this thread doesn't go on forever...  Please read the original
post again, Steve.  There were 2 main points.

1->  Great F-1 site with a lot of great footage.
2->  '67 GPL era Bandini crash

I was hoping that even though these two points were made in one sentence, no
one would pull one point out at the expense of the other and make it appear
that it was the only reason the website was recommended.

I recommended the site primarily because it's an excellent F-1 site that
shows fantastic replays of the greats at their greatest.  That is why I
originally bookmarked it, then reviewed it, and later posted the link.

The Bandini crash was interesting to me because it showed what can happen in
real life in these GPL era cars.  I feel it puts some of my video ***,
reality-craving craziness in perspective.  The Bandini crash happened and
millions of people saw it in 1967, just like they saw Ayrton Senna and many
other racers die, and just like I saw the Space Shuttle Challenger explode on
television years ago.  I still watched the Challenger explosion repeatedly on
the news (and cried about it, actually, being a 6th grader at the time) in
disbelief.  No, I don't "get off" on watching people die, and I doubt many
folks who do will bother/know how to access an automotive simulation newsgroup
like this one.

  *Concerning education:*
When taking driver's education classes at age 15, we were forced to watch
much more gruesome videos than this Bandini crash footage in order to "pound
into our brains" the severe consequences of driving intoxicated or recklessly
operating a motor vehicle.  Close up shots of bodies were shown to us and we
all cringed.  I hated it, but it was indeed "educational" in that when I felt
the need to drive my '79 Firebird like a maniac, the pictures would flash
through my mind and I would indeed get a reality check that would slow me down
to a more sane speed, as I did not want to feel what those crash victims felt
when they hit the guardrail/other car.  Strangely enough, the families of these
victims actually allowed these videos to be shown in school  driver's ed
classrooms.

I've seen other similar "gruesome" safety videos where I work, that get
graphic in order to emphasize the reality of what can happen if you operate
machinery without using the proper personal protective equipment such as safety
goggles and hard hats.  My employer felt a couple of these graphic videos were
indeed educational enough to spend money on them for us to view.  It was a bet
against his workers compensation plan.

What does this "educational aspect" have to do with video games?

I've seen enough *** crashes on television/videotape (some resulted in
death) to not get too worked up over them.  I assumed most other folks in the
newsgroup have also seen the same types of things, and for those that hadn't, I
warned them by saying "Pretty gruesome, lots of fire".  I felt this was
descriptive enough for people to decide for themselves whether they wanted to
view the footage or not.
When I'm playing GPL from now on and imagining myself really driving the real
car, the imprint of that firy disaster will make my next daredevil move a
little more frightening, a little more real, now that I know what really
happens when one of these cars smacks a wall.

  That's just me.

<snip>
"But never seem to jump to recommending a site that charts his career or
achievements!"

I still think the site has excellent F-1 footage ASIDE from this crash, as I
mentioned as point 1 in the original post.  I was not, however, searching for
the late Mr. Bandini's personal career acheivements.  Instead, I was searching
for actual F-1 in-car racing footage when I found the site, so did not bother
to post any other sites pertaining to him.

The site remains an excellent source of in-car F-1 footage, as I mentioned in
the original post.

Thank you,
Todd Wasson

Well, to be honest, I don't think anyone is having a go at you personally (I
wasn't), but I question the webmaster's motivation in posting such a
grotesque accident. The difference between Bandini's crash and those 'road
safety' films, is that in such films, many the drivers were already drunk,
driving recklessly, or whatever; You could say they got their just desserts.
Also, it's much more chilling to know that you can still end up looking
like mincemeat if you crash your ordinary car at low speed. I doubt most
people have a car with anything near the performance of the Ferrari 312, so
I can't see how it is relevant to our everyday experiences. If I have a bad
crash in GPL, I have, in the past, said "oh...shit, I died", if I know I
would have IRL, but then I've hit shift-R, and carried on. All a matter of
personal taste I suppose. Let's not make this drag on eh?
