F1RS with a Pentium 133?

by Axel Schluet » Wed, 18 Feb 1998 04:00:00

Hello,

I'm using an "old" Pentium-P133-PC. I have no 3D-Graphic.

Are there experiences with F1RS on an P133 with a good 3Dfx-Graphic?

Greetings,

Axel

Actually the CPU does affect the game. If he did have a 3dfx card he would
most likely reduce the number of computer cars to get smooth game play.
Even users with a P5-166 have reported reducing the number of cars
to 14 to get smooth gameplay. I have a P5-200MMX and it is smooth
with everything maxed out. No way with a P5-133.

Yes, I also have an ancient P133 and a Canopus Pure3D. F1RS works very well
with my system with replay off and the second farthest clip setting. I only
get slowdowns at the start of a race with more than 15 cars. Can't wait for
the AMD price cut to happen and be a K6'n fool.
BTW, anybody hear about that AMD cut? Was supposed to happen no
later than the first week of Feb.

From what I've heard, an MMX or P2 has much better floating point
performance than a K6, and from what I understand, floating point
performance is the most important factor here. I would consult an expert
before I went for a K6.

Btw, I have an old P133 with a Righteous 3D, and the game works great except
for the first corner slow down. I'm definitely going to upgrade to an MMX or
P2 very soon.

FYI Intel are planning very extensive price cuts on their PII range.
Current models will be cut, the new "Covington" will be introduced at
a very competitive price and the PII-100 series will be launched at
that time also (PII-350 and PII-400 with 100Mhz bus speeds) - these
will be expensive at the time of release.

If you scour around there'll probably be some price numbers on the web
- try Tom's hardware page (http://sysdoc.pair.com) or Intel's own site
(http://www.intel.com)

Cheers!

I have a K6 200 MMX and it runs all sim's fine, using a 3dfx accel.
FYI: The K6 can exec MMX instructions and FPU instructions
in the same bit stream without slowdowns of the Intel chips.
AMD provided seperate registers for MMX and FPU, whereas
Intel used the same one's and just renamed them. Currnet
K6 200 MMX chips may be slower on FPU in some cases
( non MMX ), but AMD is adding more pipeline to the FPU
on the next rev ( K6 300 Mzh), and the K6+3D will have
some new and powerful 3D instructions of it's own.
Whether software vendor's will support these
new instructions remains to be seen.
