Egghead Software ;-)

Sorry about the semi-off-topic thread, but I remember this being a big
discussion a month ago.

I read today that the Egghead Software store chain closed 77 stores
today and 3 top execs. quit.  The article didn't say, but we all know
it's because they didn't carry Nascar2 for Christmastime.  They lost so
much money on that dumb decision that, well, you can see what happens.
You see, when people cross the line that us simracers draw, it gets
ugly.  Simracers are now and forevermore a force to be reckoned with!
They couldn't deny us copies of this sim without paying the price.  No
sir.

Anyone else want to interfere with our hobby?  No?  Didn't think so.

I believe it's called "SUPPLY & DEMAND."   Sim racers are great
people, but in business... if stores can't supply the demand by
consumers, they lose out.  It's with everything in business.  I don't
know the entire story of the Egghead situation, but if it was pulled
off their shelves for reasons mentioned on ths newsgroup..... stupid
move!  If they pulled Nascar 2 off the shelf for "supposedly" too many
bugs..... it's an ethical move.  How many businesses do you know of
that put ethics over the almight dollar?  Not many and I find it hard
to believe that Egghead put it's ethics before the almight dollar.
Sounds like something deeper happened for them to pull the product off
the shelf.

My 2 cents

LOL !

Unfortunately, though, the store the thread started about (Cary, NC) STILL
is not carrying N2; I stopped in last Saturday and nary a copy in sight.
Of course they did have several copies of Battlecrusier 3000, which I
understand will run for about 5 minutes between crashes.  Maybe Egghead
should get a clue.

Whoa!!!!  Did anyone see the little smily face I put beside the end of
the message???  This, for those who don't know, indicates humor and
sarcasm.  I did not intend to actually put down or make any sort of real
statement about the EGGHEAD chain.  This post was intended as HUMOR!
Please consider it that way and no other way.  I was NOT serious with my
statement.  I was hoping to give some people a smile, and ended up
upsetting some people....

Good point.  I also noticed a few copies of BC3000AD at EGGHEAD.  This
is arguably buggiest computer product ever released!  Perhaps EGGHEAD
was acting ethically when they decided not to carry Nascar2, but they
surely came down off that soapbox long enough to carry Battlecruiser.
EGGHEAD has dismissed the "ethical" defense all by themselves.

Aw c'mon Chris, they may have outdated and crash-happy software, but
at least it's outrageously overpriced.

Oh, sorry Matt.  I forgot!  We're supposed to be HAPPY about paying alot
for what few things they decide to let us have!  :)  BTW, what is the deal
with that store anyway?  They doubled their size last year and have 1/4
the selection that they used to.  Hell of a way to run a railroad if you
ask me.  OOPS, maybe that's what they think they're doing :)

: Egghead not carrying Nascar2 started long before then.  They did not
: carry Sierra's FPS: Baseball 96, when it came out.  They refused to
: carry that game in there store.  When Egghead did carry the baseball
: game, they happily took many of the games back from the customers (us)
: and returned it to Sierra due to the bugginess of the game(the patch
: had fixed many of the bugs, but too late, because of Egghead openly
: allowing unhappy customers their refunds.) So, what does Sierra think
: about this?  Sierra may have decided not to provide Egghead with
: Nascar 2 before Christmas, because Egghead's decision not to carry
: FPS:Baseball 96.  All this because Egghead didn't want us, customers,
: to have a buggy game.  They paid for it for being on our side instead
: of the big corporation's side.

: This is just my opinion, so don't take it as fact.

Egghead's woes began the day years ago when they started their policy of
no software returns unless the package was unopened or there was a
faulty "disk".  I used to buy software from them, but others like me
refused to accept this policy and have boycotted Egghead ever since.  To
make matters worse for Egghead they start to "over-expand".  Both of
these have something to do with Egghead's current business state (poor
health).  Since Egghead's policy is not to accept software returns (even
if they are bug ridden), I can see why they would be loathe to carry a
software package which may make their customers un-happy if Egghead
stuck to their No Return policy.  I guess they had to eat it on FPS, and
didn't want to gamble on other Sierra early releases.  Or you maybe
right and Sierra said "no can have for Christmas".  Or, it could be that
Egghead's business woes is keeping them from being able to order stock
from software companies on credit.  This is usually how large companies
get their software.  If they are in bad financial straits, many
companies will not ship on credit.  I suspect the latter in Egghead's
case.

You make a good point, but Nascar 2 isn't a program that is so badly
bugged that it won't work without wanting to throw your computer at
the wall<grin>.  It actually plays pretty good and Egghead decided
that it wasn't in my best interest to have it, but Electronic
Boutique, Comp USA, Best Buy, and Circuit City (to mention some names)
sold the product and I'm sure made money off of it.  Let the people
decide.. if it's a badly bugged program (say that 3 times fast), bring
it back,  but my personal feeling is, how can we as consumers decide
if it's badly bugged if we're not given the chance, atleast through
Egghead, so see for ourselves.  All in all, Nascar 2 really isn't that
buggy compared to other new releases and I'm for one-glad I bought it
when I did.  Egghead should have sold the product and if it was buggy,
let the blame fall on Sierra/Papyrus.. not take the blame for not
selling.

My two cents:)

Hi,

I guess it doesn't matter much anymore now that they are closing 77 of
their stores. In the Chicago area, only the Downtown store will remain
open.

Maybe that's why they're called Egghead. Battlecruiser 3000 should have
a cool picture of the dos prompt on the box cause that about the only
thing you get see in that game.

I have been shopping at egghead for quit a few years amd every year they
seem determined
not to carry some of the lattest games and proggys! Why? Well I believe
since they've become such a large company that they stopped carring
certain software because the software houses wont give thm certain deals
for
buying in bulk. Hell they dont even buy their own display computers,
instead they rely on some local yocal
small bussines to "sponsor" them and build demo computers for them!
Comon , cutting costs is one thing, but it just goes to show all out
greed! Some marketing sack o shit in the advertising dept wants a new
4Runner and who pays? The small bussiness man.***em, I went to
egghead the other day and they didnt carry one #1 rated game. What idiot
in corporate is setting their standards I wonder?!! It just goes to show
you any moron that
can get through a minor degree in advertising can effect the lot of us!
I used to be able to ask any question to the guys that work at egghead,
but now there are alot of new faces and I think there multiplying from
the idiot's school of Best Buy and Comp USA.(DUH people). Go figure! BTW
they HDs and other hardware have sky rocketed! Why? To many people hired
on in their marketing dept. Hell they have to think of something to
prove
their productive!

Just my 5 cents
