Why no 3D in GP3 yet? Here's why

by Harjan Bran » Fri, 10 Sep 1999 04:00:00

There are two reasons for the screenshots we've seen so being software
rendered. The first one is that Geoff has always claimed he does the
graphics end at last because the hardware market changes so rapidly. But at
this stage there's one reason much more important. They all want us to think
they still need a lot of work on the game. Well I can tell you, if they've
finished creating the Monaco track they're probably pretty far in the
progress. This way they release some of the pressure by just giving us some
information, but they're not showing the back of their tongues.
Believe me, Geoff and his team are running the sim in 3D, and as soon as
they're certain that the game is bug-free and we're in the right marketing
frame they'll start copying and distributing the game. So I think when
everything goes very well it will be released at the best possible marketing
frame and that's  december ofcourse. If they can't make that one they'll do
it at the start of nexts years season just to make use of the extra
enthusiasm.

For now I hope for a december release, I don't count on it I just hope it.

Dearie me.........fancy being able to deduce all that simply by the fact
that they have shown us the Monaco track!! Amazing!!

Any chance of a few sure things in the next Kentucky Derby?  Surely you
could tell the winner simply by the fact that horses eat grass and Kentucky
is in the USA!

I don't really like your cynical tone, but if that's your style keep on
doing it. Don't you understand that Monaco is probably one the last tracks
they'll start completing? It involves so much polygones and bitmaps that if
you decide on changing anything you're in for quite some work to redo
Monaco. So you'll first start off with something like Silverstone for
instance, make sure everything works fine and that the graphics are correct.
After you've done that you'll start working on the other tracks. Youl'l
start working on Monaco from the moment you want to show the public what
you've done so far. Just because everybody knows it, and it makes great
pictures.
That's just how I see it, I still think it's a tactical game from the
developers just to release the pressure. If you don't agree with that just
tell me why you think they would start off with Monaco. I'll read and try to
understand your vision, and I won't be responding in your style.
And even I come across a bit naive, don't you understand. I just want it to
come out as soon as possible, maybe that has influenced my view on the
situation a bit.

We all want this and we all want that and we all think this and we all
think that, but NOBODY knows NOTHING at the moment. It's all totally
useless speculation. Those who don't like GP2 try to sink GP3 before
it's even released. Those who DO like GP2 will insist that GP3 will be
fantastic, no matter how bad it (might) look now. (which I don't agree
with: just look at the wheels of the Arrows, as smooth as a babies but
:-)  Not some crossing between a square and a circle like in MGPRS
<G>)

You can come up with 1000 reasons why you think that it will be a
peace of crap, and 1000 reasons why you think it's still in a very
early stage and will be the best thing since sliced bread.

And want a reason why they start with Monaco? What about making sure
rightaway that GP3 will run OK on the "heaviest" track of the 16 that
will be provided?
