Gosh RT.....

Sorry to disappoint you about not "spouting off my greatness" this time.
I'll try to fix that in my next post.

Glad it helped you out, Joel.

I didn't have it that bad, I just wanted to return to DX8.1a so I could
continue to use 3DMark2001SE benchmarking (it wouldn't run with DX9.0a
installed).  I think if I either had WindowsXP installed, or an ATI video
card (which uses some DX9.0 components) I would have stayed with it.  But,
the fact that 3DMark2001SE wouldn't run.....and I am using a GF4ti4600 which
doesn't use any DX9.0 components.....I opted to go back to DX8.1a for a
while (still running Win98SE....best *** ops-sys, IMHO....so far).  Also,
DX9.0 whacked about 10% off my sim frame rates (as measured with FRAPS in
F1-2002 and NR2003).  Not a big deal, granted....but hey, those precious
little FPS points came at considerable expense and effort (at tweak-city).

By the way Joel.....you don't say what video card, operating system, etc.,
but I understand if you use an Nvidia card, and do not have a DX9.0
certified driver (which is the 41.xx's and higher I believe), some people
are reporting similar problems as you said you had......just thought I'd
mention that in case there was some reason you really needed DX9.0 to be
installed.

Take care....

Removing DX 9.0 From Your Computer - Easy Steps!

Ian...

Not meaning to dispute you, but I don't know of any "games" that will run in
Win98SE (which is all of the ones currently on the market) that will not run
with DX8.1a installed.  Perhaps you are speaking from experience.....and not
rumor.  If that is the case, I suspect something else is keeping your game
from running......it shouldn't be required to have DX9.0 installed (except
to take advantage of some graphics software in the game, but that only is
applicable to the ATI cards, since no Nvidia card uses DX9.0 functions).  I
could be wrong about this....but I just have not heard of any games that
won't run........from checking all the graphics card/game forums lately.

Removing DX 9.0 From Your Computer - Easy Steps!

by Tom Pabs » Thu, 17 Apr 2003 05:34:20

LOL....Eldred....

I didn't figure it out!  I was chatting with a guy in a graphics card tech
Forum......and we were screwing around with one of those DOS based "DX
Uninstall programs"......which neither of us could manage to get to work
right.....and we came up with this "stupid but it works" thing!  It was
really his idea.....I was just a willing "guinea pig" to try it!  I do think
if you could manage to tap into the beta group for DX.......you'd find all
kinds of things that can be done with it......that don't get made public by
MS.  One I know you can do (but don't know how to do it....yet)....is to
"mix" versions of DX so you can discard the .dll's that don't work for you,
and keep the ones that do!  In other words, you can sort of "cook up your
own recipe" of DX version on your computer!  That would be cool!

But, thanks for thinking I would be smart enough to come up with this thing
on my own accord!  I'm not, however.......LOL....

Regards,

Tom

Well, I'll do that Dave when I'm forced to run DX9.0 (for some reason).  But
right now, that's not the case and my system ran better on DX8.1a (so did
the sims I run).

Aren't you still using Win98SE?  Is this "the kettle calling the pot black?"
LOL......

Removing DX 9.0 From Your Computer - Easy Steps!

Tom,

I'm also running Win98se on my system, while the computer I just built
for my son runs XP professional. Here's my systems specs:
Asus A7V 333 Mother Board, board flashed to lastest Bios and latest VIA 4in1
drivers
AMD XP 2000+
X-Tacy Ti4 4400 drivers: 43.45
512 MB of DDR SDRAM pc2700
Win98se

Joel

I just can't convience myself or my wife that I need to spend another
$150 for XP again. Too bad once you buy it, you can't use it on all your
computers like you could with 98.That's the main reason why I'm still
running Win98se.

Strange,
My system is screaming with dx9a , and runs 3dmark 2001se just fine.
Athlon XP2400+ ( overclocked to 2600+)
ATI 9700 Pro

Very pleased with the peformance.

Not disappointed at all, TB. Surprised and delighted. So much so, that I
think I may alter my whole approach to this newsgroup and some of the regs
who I have had "disagreements" with in the past. I might even send a
personal message of apology to JS and DE in the hope that one day I will be
accepted and loved by everyone here ;)

Seriously, that DX removal info was very helpful.
