Your experiences with Dirt Track Racing?

Hi Andrew,

I've had DTR since it was released. It installed easily, runs excellent on
my PII400 and is quite fun. That said, I *never* play it. There are too many
sims and just so many hours in the day<g>. Dirt tracks and stock cars aren't
really my thing, every time I played DTR I found myself wishing I was on an
AMA flat tracker instead of in a Modified. I understand they will soon
release a Sprint Car version of DTR, I'll probably buy that one too<g>.

I just tried the demo - man was that fun.

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone here plays it - solo or online. Please
let me know what you think!

Well I have been playing DTR since the demo was first released, and had been
playing online alot (but now I am prepping to convert my MCSE from 4.0 to
2000....so NO time for games... DAMN YOU BILL GATES!)
Anyway. Online play is mostly good. Idiots will always bring you down, but
get in with a good group of people and it is really fun. If your a fan of
the genre you be in heaven. I recommend getting the game. For $20 bucks
American it is hard to go wrong.
That sprint car game looks really cool...looks like a "must play event"...so
getting started in DTR will help.
Later,
Brian

. For $20 bucks

If you have Best Buy near you, you may find it for $10....thats what I paid
when I broke down and bought it. Career mode is pretty fun, different from
the sims I am used to. Havent bothered with multi play as of yet, but I sure
got my $10 out of it.

Although for my "serious" sim racing I stick to GPL, I have to admit
that racing DTR online is really a hell of a lot of fun! To do it,
you'll have to get the retail version with the latest patches. Online
games are easy to find, and you can jump right in and join the fun.
There's no qualifying -- just a "random grid" -- and the racing can be
fender-to-fender, passing and getting re-passed. Unlike GPL where minor
contact is disastrous, in DTR it's an expected part of the racing.
Also, a race only lasts a few minutes so you can get a lot of racing in
a short time.

DTR seems to handle the online "warping" situation quite differently
from GPL, and it can be very bizarre visually (cars seeming to float
through the air or take very strange lines).

You're kidding!? The game was developed in Australia and it hasn't been
released there? Also, isn't dirt track racing a popular sport there? I
can see where DTR might have limited appeal in Europe, but I thought
that Australia had a lot of local oval tracks similar to some U.S.
regions.

I think this game is great, especially the single player
career mode where you participate in multi-race nights.
You race in heats to try to get to the main event.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to play it with my
current joystick/pedals rig!  I have a Logitech
Extreme Digital 3D joystick, and CH Pro Pedals.  Both
are USB.  They appear as two separate game controllers
(joystick IDs) in the Windows menus, and DTR only supports
one.  I have tried assigning all controls to the stick,
and this works, but I would much prefer to use both
controllers together.

(Nascar 3, GPL, and NFS:PU support multiple game
controllers.  I hope this will become standard in all
new games.).

CH Products has been promising a combo driver which
might help me (assuming it with work with my non-CH
joystick).  But this combo driver has been "in the
final stages of development" for quite some time
(at least since last December?)

So I probably need to get a wheel in order to play DTR
with my pedals.  Has anybody been able to use a
stick/pedals combo for DTR?

thanks

Got the retail game as a Christmas present 6 months ago.  I don't play it
all the time because as another poster said, there are only so many hours in
a day.  But it is a fun sim.  Sliding around the tracks with
throttle-induced oversteer is great fun, and requires a delicate touch.
I've never driven a real car on a dirt track, but it feels to me like
driving in snow, and the physics are quite good.

The downside is that the tracks are too similar, and the racing gets
repetitive.  Is there such a thing as a dirt "road course"?  That would take
away some of the tedium.  Another downside is the engine revs don't sound
all that great.

Unlike another poster, I find the AI fairly challenging - make a mistake in
a turn, and at least a couple of cars will sneak by you.

Also, DTR runs fine on my P233MMX with a 12MB Voodoo2 and 64 MB RAM.
