There is the possibility that someone could easily make a game which
is a 'clone' of the cars and tracks and stuff, like Monaco Racing
Simulation 2, or whatever.

It won't cost them nearly as much to put out a good game without
having to fork out for the ludicrous licencing fee.

Monaco failed because, without a licence, you've got no mass-market
sales appeal (except for the sim community).

But with no officially licenced game on the PC to be compared
against...

Its also possible that, without the F1 licence, EA will turn the ISI
team to another type of racing?  Cart? Touring Cars?  They aren't
exactly going to let ISI go to waste, are they?
And that wouldn't be a bad thing, either would it?  If they did, how
long before the sim-community makes a superb F1 mod for it?

They are already busy doing NASCAR Thunder 2004.

Not me.

Giving all those F1 licences away gave us GP4 and F1 2002 as the best the PC
had to offer. Aside from the GTR2002 mod, there was nothing really great
about either. I have Formula One 2002 and I have to say that it is better
than GP4 and PC F1 2002 (which is much better than PS2 F1 2002). It was
quite a step up from Formula One 2001.

To be honest, I think it all shakes out quite well:

Sony do F1
ISI do that crappy NASCAR stuff
Geoff Crammond retires
Codemasters do CrapWagons
DID (whatever they are called now) do WRC
Papy do CART (!!!)

I think the best series (F1, CART, WRC) are mated up with the best racing
developers. It all depends on that last line!

I realize this response is pretty late (and hope this hasn't been
answered yet), but in my experience console licenses and PC licenses are
seperate.   Hell, often times they're seperate in different territories.

Sony continues to crow about their PS2 exclusives: Grand Theft Auto 3
and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.   In both cases, they got PC releases
as well, simply because Sony considers the two wildly different markets
with very little overlap.   It's possible that Sony's announcement is
that they have _console_ exclusivity, and the whole reason EA is out is
because the game doesn't sell as well as their NASCAR games and they
refuse to pay the amount for licensing given how much they earn.

It will remain to be seen, however, how it all plays out.

The license for Daytona was given to Sega a few years back and that was for
EVERYTHING...consoles, pc games. They finally did make a version for the PC,
but it was a year or more after the console version and crapy as heck.
