NASCAR in the UK

Greetings!!!!!

Got my copy of NASCAR here today. Got a few questions for you guys Stateside:

1) Does the US version of the game come complete with the correct car set???
What I mean is, are the cars in the correct sponsors logos, with the correct
drivers names (with the exception of #3 Earnhardt!)??? The UK version comes
with a crappy set of car graphics. The strange thing is that at the end of the
game, all of the sponsors logos & driver info is listed as copyright, but
doesn`t appear anywhere!!

2) I`ve FTP`d the 1994 car set from didnt.doit.wisc.edu. I can load this set
fine & the game runs. However, I can`t access the garage section using this
set. I get an error message telling me that the garage can`t be loaded. If I
revert to the original car set, everything is fine.

Any suggestions / help / answers on the above would be appreciated....

Also, BTW, I believe that we`ve got a different manual here in Europe. From
what I`ve read the US release has a large 150 page plus manual. Is this
correct???? We got a 75 page affair which is tri-lingual, giving a total of 21
pages in English, with no track maps, driver tips etc....

Still, it`s an awesome game & the SVGA is unbelievable........

Agree whole heartedly about the manual, Gavin, I'd complain to ***
but they are a bunch of idiots who probably haven't noticed. Any
US dealers reading this - there is a huge market for photocopied
USA NASCAR manuals over here, whoever gets one into the UK first
could make a nice killing!

I rang their tech line on the 1/12 to ask if the game was out - 'pre
christmas' was all the guy would tell me, 36 hours later it's on the
streets. Really fills you with confidence that they have been boning up on
it so they can answer tech queries, don't it!!!!

I can solve the cars.dat file problem as I just spent the weekend
trying to get the garage to load. The problem is that the US car names
are different to the UK ones and the garage part of the program looks
for a specific car name to draw in the window on the right. This is car
13 in the game but it is actually car 3 in the US .dat file. What
worked for me was to go through the USA cars.dat with xtgold and replace all
the occurances of 'KELL_5' (the name of US car #3) with 'BENG13' (UK car
#13). When the UK .EXE file looks for BENG13 now when loading the garage, it
can find it. Everything now works and I am racing with the proper cars. What
a waste of time tho! Thanks again ***!

Yeah, I sometimes can't believe the incompetence of software houses. It's
really about time they got their act together - if they are going to charge
40 - 50 quid for a game then you deserve full back up / support /
documantation. It is all too typical when phoning and asking for release
dates to be fobbed off with 'well it could be any time really' - I was
kept waiting for MicroProse F1GP for about 18 months in the belief that
it was only a month from release.

*** has the worst customer support.  I had trouble with Seventh Guest and
they never did help me solve it, even though they told me they were mailing me
a fix.

It is really terrible that Papyrus used ***, because they have one of the
best customer service departments in the computer business, next only to
Thrustmaster.

Thanks for the information!  And there is also alternate way to do this.
Hex edit file objs/objs.dat and replace "BENG13" with "KELL_5" and US
car sets should work with Nascar Racing (UK) without editing the cars.dat.
Saves some work if car sets are updated frequently.  Propably after
this change the original european car set doesn't work (I haven't
tested), but it isn't too big loss;-)
