SIMRACING ONLINE: Finally, an index page!

by Tony Joh » Sat, 05 Oct 1996 04:00:00

Well, everyone, just when you thought SRO was "vaporware," I finally
got my ***in gear and put up the "site frame" today.  That means
that now all five of the partner sites are now live onsite and hooked
into an index page that actually WORKS.

Now, this is not to say everything is polished off completely.  I have
extremely limited time to go through the site and work on stuff, and
the other partners are in the same fix.  But progress is continuing.

The newest addition to the SRO "family" is the Racer's Choice Web
Directory, an old project of mine I've revamped with CGI.  My goal is
to get the RCWD set up so that there are two racing-related link lists
-- one, a raw list that allows anyone and everyone to add a link, and
another that is much like Stroud's CWSAPPS page.  This "rated"
directory will judge submitted Web sites by a set of five or six
criteria, along with a full review of the site with its pros and cons.
I'm hoping that this area of RCWD will help to sift the "look-alike"
cookie-cutter pages from the core group of really useful sites out
there, as well as provide you with a comprehensive and accessible
guide to sim-racing related sites on the 'Net.

This is not going to be easy, nor will it happen overnight.  I'm
personally managing three sites (SRO's main index, IWCCCARS, and now
RCWD) as well as maintaining the server, so I'm very strapped for time
and, lately, cash.  But I'll keep everyone posted as to how things are
going.

In the meantime, enjoy the site, let us know what you think.

Hi Tony,

I'm just curious to know whether you'd accept other partner sites than
the ones already mentioned by you...

My site's address is http://www.ipm.net/~hmb/

Thanks!

We're still evaluating how to handle "partner" status with sites.  At
the moment we're going to do it in conjunction with the RCWD, and
sites that get the highest ratings will probably be offered that
status.  However, this is still in embryonic stages, so we're still
trying to come up with a partner concept that is fair for everyone.
Also, at SOME point I am going to be finding other ways to fund the
server (100 bucks a month on MY salary is too much after a while), so
that might be a factor as well.

Thanks,
tj

I would like to ask you something, set the option of getting the
zipped versions of the SImracing News through FTP *normally*. Don't
set it "ftp:etc.zip", I believe this will only work with Navigator..

Actually, it works with almost any browser built within the last year
or so, but I will certainly pass that along to Messrs. Wallace and
Nelson.

Actually, it *doesn't* work with MSIE 3.0  :(

Pick one or more: Model Rockets (competition-NERCB) / PCs (even Atari!) /
Papyrus ICR-ICR2-NCR / Who needs a life when you have multiple non-lives?

Okay, I see what's going on.  This seems to be a problem exclusive to
SRN -- having a link like http:foobar.zip or ftp:foobar.zip does NOT
work with all browsers.  I thought the previous poster meant
ftp://www.simracing.com/foobar.zip, etc.

You might let John Wallace and/or Marc Nelson know about this -- I'll
send 'em a message as well.
