System which otherwise runs perfect and is everything i want has an annoying
habit of freezing solid randomly.

I have swapped every single component inside now for totally different
alternatives to narrow it down.

that.

512 DDR...removed and 256 DDR from mate put in.Also used both of mine
singularly.

9700 Pro....GF3 ti 500...GF2 GTS 64......GF2 MX400.....happens with all.

C Media onboard sound and SBLive 5.1......happens with both

Always happens randomly and the pc is totally frozen and the sound is stuck
on whatever it is doing....which led me to think its a sound problem,as if i
remember correctly it hasnt happened when sound wasn't being
heard......never happened whilst surfing the Net with no music on for
example.

Usually when playing a game....middle of a race....or playing Golf whilst
having music on in background ..

So as a common factor...sound is always there when it freezes.

Any ideas from that wealth of info....LOL...?

As ever great to hear any feedback as it is now getting me down :(

the only thing I can add is to check your irq's to see if the sound card
is sharing an irq with another device.  good luck.

IRQ 9 is shared...

Microsoft ACPI Compliant System
Ali PCI to USB Open Host Controller

Conflicts/Sharing

Ali PCI figures in all 5 of them,4 of them are the Ali PCI to AGP Controller

In my IRQ list all are alone apart from the one above,it looks in good
order.

Power supply or temps.  Check them both.

I am betting it's either the power supply or your running win98 or win98se
vid card also possible,as are solar flair ups

The symptoms of an overheating video card. But since you've swapped it, poor
power supply (to the video card) is next best guess.

Alot of what has been said is making alot of sense to me...

It DOES seem like its a video/power problem....

It HAS got worse since i added my SLK800 and Delta 80cm fan.

But with temperatures at 35 - 40 degrees i thought all thoughts about heat
would be banished forever.

The only real constants throughout are mobo and power supply, and of course
cables etc

So if the jury agrees....how about a new power supply and mobo for Xmas...?

;)
