Lemans New Game

by news.bellatlantic.ne » Tue, 02 Jul 2002 04:22:41

I was in a Babbages store this afternoon and saw what looked like a new
LeMans game.  Infogames was listed on the packaging, but I cannot seem to
find a review or a website to learn more about the game.  It looked fairly
new as it had the Audi R8 on the cover and mentioned DirectX 8 as a system
requirement.  Does anybody know anything about this game?

BTW my main worry is that it is the Test Drive LeMans game that was out a
few years ago that was absolutely dreadful.

Cheers!

Don't have it, but apparently it is based on the Infogrames console title that
was originally released for the Dreamcast then ported to the PS2.  I have
both.  The DC version is a pleasant surprise.  The PS2 disappointing in that
it was virtually the same, taking no advantage of the PS2's superior
capability.  Plus they also managed to make loads intollerable.  Recall
reading a few things here basically saying that the PC version is okay, more
or less a direct port.  Which in the PC world makes it a pretty mediocre
title.  Call it middling in fidelity.  I'm staying away.

Well, that's YOUR opinion, anyway.

If you're a setup freak, then this one's not for you, but it is a
good, solid racing simulation -- it may lack as a vehicle simulator to
some degree, but the racing is fun overall, and the driving model is
convincing, if not GPL calibur.

I still fire up my Dreamcast just to play the DC LeMans title, and
since the NEW PC version is just a console port, it should be fine.  I
will probably buy the PC version, in fact, just so I can play with my
TSW wheel (the Thrustmaster wheel for the Dreamcast is mediocre at
best, and it pales in comparison to my TSW2).

John, I have the Dreamcast version as well and it's a lot of fun (wish
someone would convert F355 for the PC, but I digress).  From what I've
read in reviews so far, the problem with the PC version is that they
"updated the physics" and the cars respond poorly to wheel input.  I'm
reserving judgement until I try the demo, but if there's anything I
hate it's racing games with awful controller schemes (Super 1 Karting
comes to mind).

Speaking of controllers, have you found any good wheels for the DC?  I
have a cheapish mad catz wheel and it's the most awful thing I've ever
used.  I swear it has a 10 degree deadzone...

I use a Thrustmaster Ferrrari wheel for my DC. It was $30 at my local EB and
works well with most racing games. (TD LeMans has a largish deadzone, but
F355 Challenge works perfectly.)

Thanks,
Alex
