GTR multiplayer not working

by Dare » Sun, 27 Feb 2005 07:47:45

I have 2 machines at home connected each to a Netgear wireless router.
Pings are fine.  Firewalls disabled on both machines.  But in multiplayer I
do not see the other machine that is hosting a game, either when trying to
get the lost of available games, or by specifying the IP address.

Both machines are running separate, legit copies of GTR.

Both are at 1.2.3.0

I really have no idea where to look.  Anyone know of any issues with MP and
GTR?

Any pointers are appreciated.

Your router will need to direct ports 34297, 34298 and 34347 to the machine
running the server.

Using one machine only running the client can you see any games in the
lobby? With one machine running the dedicated server and the other running
the client can it see the game via IP or the lobby?

So far I only tried connecting between the two machines on the local
LAN, which I think would be easiest to troubleshoot with no port
forwarding, or router firewalling issues that can crop up.

So on the local LAN, either when one machine hosts a game, or is a
dedicated server, and the client goes into the multiplayer games list
and either searches, or specifies the server's IP, the game doesn't show
up.

I don't suppose the English translation patch can cause this.  Or the
difference in which tracks or cars are installed.

Is the dedicated server set to broadcast in the lobby? I can't see my dedi
server on the LAN if it's set to broadcast in the lobby. I have to go to the
lobby to see it.

No, it isn't set to broadcast in the lobby.

I've done some more troubleshooting:  I connected both machines to
eachother via a crossover cable, bypassing any hub or "router".

I ran a packet sniffer on both machines, and I found that when searching
for LAN games, the client sends UDP requests for ports on
255.255.255.255.

When I specify an IP, the client sends same UDP requests (ports ~ 32200-
32300) to the IP of the server.

But none of the UDP packets show up on the server machine.

I am running Ethereal.  I am pretty sure that even if a Windows
firewall, or ZoneAlarm was blocking something, the packets would at
least show up on the ethernet device, and show up in Ethereal, THEN get
blocked by the higher layer firewalls.

Any ideas?  Maybe there is some network/security option in Windows that
I'm missing.

I appreciate the help, by the way.

I ended up tracking this down to one of the NICs.  It is some kind of an
onboard NVidia NIC (either on the motherboard or the video card).
Slapped in a $5 RealTec and all is working great.

This might help someone with a similar problem.

Thanks for the help guys.  LAN GTR is much fun!

You probably just needed the right drivers for that NIC, but if it's now
working I'd just get on with GTR.
