Act Labs or Guillemot Racing Wheels?

by dero » Fri, 10 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I'm going to buy a FF wheel real soon. I want a shifter lever, so have
decided on either the Act Labs Force and the Shifter or the Guillemot
Ferrari Force wheel. I found one review of the Guillemot wheel (good review
at mgprs2.com) but would like to read more. Does anybody know of any other
reviews on the Guillemot wheel, when it will be available and about how much
(US) ? Also, would anyone using either wheel let me know how its working
out. Hmmm, actually I could get a LWFF and make my own shift lever, wouldn't
be too hard...  :)

Hi Slot,
There is a review of the two wheels in December's issues of Maximum
PC.  I really don't think there is any comparison.  We have the only
"independent" shifter.  This means that you can shift from 5 to 2, or
4 to 1 directly rather than having to go through the gears
consecutivlely.  You can also check out the review at
www.anandtech.com
www.rs2league.com

Act Labs or Guillemot Racing Wheels?

by dero » Sat, 11 Dec 1999 04:00:00

Thanks for the replies, but I think you guys misunderstood me. There are
lots of reviews on the Act Labs combo. What I wanted to read is another
review on the Guillemot wheel. Phil Lee's post with his review actually
helped a lot. It seems like a nice wheel and cheaper than the Act Labs.
However, I've been on Guillemot's web site and in their own forum and must
say that they seem to be a flakey company. Raymond's (from Act Labs) reply
to my post here is more than anyone is getting on Guillemot's own forum!
I'm reasonably sure that the Act is a better made and stronger unit and will
probably last longer, and also think their tech support is much better and
responsive. The shifter is nice and may become the next *** revolution,
though at this time I really don't care about a gated shifter, I may in the
future when its all the rage. The only drawback I see to the Act Labs Wheel
and Shifter combo (besides the price) is that in most of the reviews they
say the large motor causes some notchy feeling to the wheel. This would
cause it to be less precise in steering critical angles. But nobody mentions
if this can be eliminated by turning down the FF effect's strength. Most of
the reviews spend a lot of time talking about the box it came in and showing
you pictures of the motor and stuff. I want to know how it FEELS in  lots of
driving sims, from Monster Truck Madness2 to MGPRS2 and everywhere in
between. I wish I could review it myself. I could buy the Act Labs units and
try them under their 30 day guarantee, but if I wanted to return them it
would cost me $40 in lost shipping (20 bucks each way). The Guillemot wheel
would do the trick for me, but its not available in the US yet and there is
no place to email a sales dept. at Guillemot to find out when it will be
(stupid, right?). I want a FF wheel NOW!! :)

Are you guys sucking up to Papyrus to get support for the RS Shifter in GPL?  You
should be <g>.  When and if that happens, your sales will surely increase IMO.

Act Labs or Guillemot Racing Wheels?

by GTX_SlotCa » Sun, 12 Dec 1999 04:00:00

Hi Joerg,
(my news server went down and I had to remove/re-install my news account,
instead of my last name, DeRoy, I entered my online name/team this time)

Looks cheap, oh no :(       Unforntunately that's not what I wanted to hear
pal. I just ordered the Ferrari wheel online last night for $130 (free
shipping??) I should have it by Thurs or Fri and after using it a couple
days I'll also post a review. I do know that if the wheel you saw had one
clamp, flimsy paddles and soft pedal springs, its the old version. I just
hope it doesn't look cheap. I bought it because Phil's post was positive,
the review and my conversations at mgprs2 were good, the price is right, and
if I don't like it I can always sell it to someone less critical or on eBay.
Also, one review (just one) said the Act Labs felt notchy and that  may make
the steering less precise in some games where a one degree heading at a
point in a corner may be critical. I have never driven with FF so I can only
imagine the feeling. If I was an experience FF user it may not bother me, I
don't know. One thing I'm sure about, judging from their web sites,
Guillemot is kinda flakey and Act Labs is a class act, the company and the
products. I may end up with one of their units yet. My 5 year old boy can't
use a wheel because he can't reach the pedals, may he  could use the
Ferrari's levers :) In the end, if I wasn't happy with any of these wheels,
I'll get a LWFF and make my own shifting lever.

I cant find the act labs wheel at any store in Oklahoma. What retailers
carry your wheels?

Hello David,
Hey, whatever it takes to bring a better *** experience to the
driving sim enthusiast.  If that means sucking up to Papyrus, then
that's what we'll do.  :)
GPL support for our RS Shifter is a two way street.  Papyrus would
surely benefit as much as ourselves if they implemented a patch that
supports the ACT LABS RS Shifter.
Please e-mail Papyrus yourself as well if you would like to see RS
Shifter support.  :)  The more "pressure"  they receive, the better.
