League Set-Up Question

by TlgtrPr » Tue, 25 Jan 2005 08:46:46

I am in a group that has a "friendly" off-line NR03 league. This is our third
year and we/some feel we need to make some adjustments. So I am coming to the
experts for some advice. Hopefully one of you can answer my long but fairly
simple question--once you get past the question the answer can be one word... I
will try to give you the info you need as succinctly as possible.

There are 8 of us in the league. The way we work it is everybodys car is in
everybody's race-yours driven by you-the other seven by the computer. We have a
big old Excel sheet where the points for all cars get averaged, with a
percentage bonus for the human car.

Last year some of us used the 'adaptive speed control' and some used the
adaptive AI' feature. Some would like us to all use the adaptive AI this year.
Now our understanding is that for adaptive AI to work you have to have done a
race on each track to set a 'baseline.' Now, finally the question....

If we each use the same 'player' and car file and just change the 'roster,'
'schedule,' and adjust our 'championship settings' the new year and tell the
game to use adaptive AI do we still need to do the baseline race or will the
game pick up a baseline from our last years races? Hopefully that makes
sense....

Please let me know if you need further information. Any help would be GREATLY
appreciated!!

League Set-Up Question

Well this will be more than one word, and still may not even answer your
question.

First to make things clear

Auto AI is when the game sets the AI percent, but the AI runs the same speed
all race.

Adaptive AI is when the AI speed is varied through out the race based on the
human drivers performance.

Personally I do not like the adaptive AI at all. The biggest problem if you
get to far ahead the AI will get its boost and be so fast they run you over
if you don't get out of their way. On the flip side if you were to spin they
will slam on the brakes and wait for you to catch up.

Auto AI will set the AI speed based on previous races (BTW-its stored in the
playerrec.ini file).  This would be your best way of handicapping the
members of the league. However the downside is that one race at a track is
not enough to get a properly set percentage rating.  With out have the
adaptive AI enable the auto AI is very slow to increase the AI percentage.
Another downside is races run under auto AI are the only ones that count to
figuring out the auto AI percent.  So you may have run 100 races at a track
with a set AI percent, but the Auto AI will default to 70%

Here is my suggestion.

Most guys know what AI setting they are completive at. For example I'm
usually around 95% depending on the mod. I would edit the playerec.ini file
to set the auto AI percent to what each member claims to be their typical
percentage, 95% in my case. Now during the week have them run at least one
practice race at that weeks track to fine tune that particular tracks
setting. Most guys run at least one practice race before a league event
anyway so its not a big deal. If they don't then they are still running
their claimed AI percent. The practice race doesn't have to be full length.
Even a 5% length will work.

While the auto AI and adaptive AI sound good in theory the application of
both leaves a lot to be desired.
