EB returns: heads-up

I may be the last one to learn this, but FWIW Electronics Boutique no longer
has the no-questions asked return policy of the past.  I picked up a copy of
GP4 just to see if it was as bad as people are saying (yup), figuring if it
was, I'd return it with no hassle as I'd always done before at EB.  No more.
Exchange or credit only if you've actually popped the shrink wrap.  While I
understand the change, it was an unwelcome surprise.  Picked up a pre-owned
copy of Rally Trophy for $20 and a gift card.  Could be worse...  Could've
been stuck with GP4.

I think their policy changed due to the proliferation of inexpensive CDRW
drives and software that can "backup" practically anything currently on the
market.

I also learned about this policy when I made the mistake of buying the "new"
version of LeMans 24 Hours about 2 months ago. I returned it the next day
only to discover the new return policy.

An additional provision in the new policy is that once you've made the
allowed exchange you can NOT return the exchanged item even if it does not
work on your system.

Their policy is still better than most other stores that sell software. At
least you can exchange it once in the hopes of getting something better.

Babbage's return policy used to be similar to the old Electronic Boutique's
policy. I wonder if their policy has changed also. Anyone know?

Babbages/Software Etc. has NOT changed to match the far more restrictive
policy at EB. Babbages is still 7 days for a full refund, no hassles.

I think so. I had my hopes up, but after reading that review at BHMS I'm
glad I bought F12002 instead.

That and the fact that they deal in a much larger volume of console
games than before, the majority of which really suck, especially for
$50.

That is the official policy....if your a regular customer, they will still
help you out...they are for me. But I can understand why they had to
adjust...

When I bought Battlefield 1942 at Babbage's the other day, the guy made
it a point to tell me "If you don't like it you have 7 days to bring it
back, opened or not, no questions asked."

(snip)

Thanks to everyone about the Babbage's return policy information. I guess
I'll start checking their store more often.

I agree.

That $50 price for console games is the main reason I won't buy one of those
systems. I  just wait for the price to drop on the PC software I want and
then get it. I can't see spending $50 on a game only to see the price drop
to about $20-25 about 3-6 months later. Sierra is especially bad about this,
IMO. They seem to release most of their titles at $50-60 and about 3 months
later drop the price by at least 50%. Makes me wonder why they don't just
release them at about $29.99 and leave it at that price for about a year.
The end result will be about the same. At that price point they might just
sell more! Then there's CroTeam that releases their games at $19.99 and they
work well and are fun to play.

An interesting side note: some EULAs specify that if you disagree with
the terms, after uninstalling the software, you can return the product
for a full refund.

Don't know what weight this would carry at a retailer though.

I had an experience once where I bought some REALLY AWFUL home-design
software at Best Buy.  The box (I think it was a Broderbund product)
clearly stated "100% money back guarantee", or something to that
effect.  Best Buy initially refused to honor my request for a refund,
but after I showed them the box, they *eventually* did refund my
money.

People wonder why some people are pirates... no excuse, but I can
sympathize.
