NFS Hot Pursuit 2

I know "just for fun" racers on this group aren't really popular, but on
comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action nobody discusses much besides first-person
shooters.

I like all the Need for Speed games, so I picked this one up and so far
I'm disappointed . The graphics aren't really better than Porsche Unleashed.
What's the real killer is something is wrong with the whole feeling of the
controls.  The force feedback just seems to rumble pointlessly half the time
instead of exerting real forces, and I've tried several different settings
and I can't get it to work.  As a result, I really have a hard time
"feeling" what the car is doing.  It also says my Momo USB racing wheel
isn't specificly recognized (huh?).   This game just doesn't seem half as
polished as the old Need for Speed games.  I don't get it, even in Porsche
Unleashed or High Stakes the wheel did more than just "rumble", and it
actually had more graphical options (oh yeah, with max details this game
runs like ***on my Athlon 2400 and Radeon 9700 Pro).

It's a very disappointing experience, overall.  I may just have to go back
to playing the old Hot Pursuit.

I found the one glowing thing about this game were the graphics.  They
were incredible, although MBWR takes the prize now (IMHO).

Also, the lack of an in-car camera was inexcusable (sp?).  That has been
a staple of the NFS series from the start.

NFS:HP2 has been raked over the coals enough in the past so I'll stop
there. :)

BTW, there is a group called alt.games.need-for-speed.  There's not a
lot of traffic but it is a dedicated group.

This title was written specifically for the PS2, and in fact it's one of the
best driving/racing games available for the PS2, but the PC version is a
poor quality port, and doesn't even include all the features of the PS2
version.

Quite a shame really, that EA didn't take the time to develop and release a
quality PC version.

Read these two reviews, both from the same source comparing the PS2 and PC
versions of this title.

By the way, you'll notice that the PC version can be had for under $12 these
days, whereas the PS2 version still commands a price of over $30.

That's interesting.

I found the graphics to be A LOT better then any other NFS edition..

What pisses me off the most is no internal (cockpit) view, or I'm just
too stupid to find it :)

I agree with you!  If it exists I can't find it either. They have the
camera with the view, but no dashboard, wheel, or anything that
resembles a car interior

Did anybody get the force feedback to actually work?  the 242 readme says
that they were supposed to have included torque foces on the wheel, but I
can't feel anything remotely like it.  The wheel just vibrates mindlessly
like a console controller, sort of like Rallisport Challenge only even more
lame.

I don't really care too much about in-car views- I can live without them
as long as other parts are good, but I just think all the cars feel bad.  I
can't tell at all when a car is losing grip, so driving the cars is really
frustrating (that, and they are all tail-happy rear-wheel drives).

Oh yeah, and in the replay view, I can't figure out how to get external
views of my car like in the old games.  That's just f'ing stupid.   Why the
hell would I want to watch my car race again from a view I just saw?  I want
to admire my car and watch it pull off cool moves.

Oh yeah, and contrary to what others said, the graphics in this game
aren't that hot.  Real-time reflections is about the only advantage this
game has over Need for Speed PU.  The textures are about the same, which is
to say good but not-quite-photorealistic and a muted color palette.  Also,
the polycount is slightly elevated, but the lighting quality is the same as
ever and IMO, lighting is more important than the no. of polygons.  But
c'mon, I want to see a PC game with Gran Turismo 3's graphics and color
palette, not this drab ***that looks like it's 3 years old (just look at
how  good MotoGP 2 looks... that's a great looking game).

The PS2 version is excelent, with a great physics model driving feel.

Tge PC, Gamecube, and XBox versions where done by a different studio,
EA Seattle. Instead of porting the fine PS2 game, they did their own
driving physics which, frankly, suck.

EA Seattle, by the way, no longer exists. The big boys at EA were not
pleased, since they had every chance to use the superior PS2 physics.

>Great physics in NFS?

Yes, the PS2 version has a great arcade physics model ... I never said
it was realistic did I? But they utilized physics perfectly for an
arcade game.
