Viper Racing controller erratic

Viper Racing controller erratic

by Tom Harringto » Wed, 28 Mar 2001 14:20:19

With Viper Racing the controller is erratic on my 350 MHZ AMD system with
Windows98.  The manual shift buttons work on the starting line, but as the
green light hits, they stop working.  The steering is erratic, and there is
a delay in the accelerator pedal.

I've run this game on my other (similarly spec'd) computer under Windows95
and know how its supposed to work.  I thought that the problem was my NASCAR
Sprint Wheel, but the same syptoms occur with my new ANCO Force Feedback USB
Wheel, which I've tested successfully with my other favorite games (GPL,
CART, GP2 w/ patch for USB, NASCAR3, SCGT, etc.)

My system includes:

AMD 350 MHZ
DFI mainboard
SIS 6236 video card with Voodoo2
64 MEG RAM
ANCO AVB Force Feedback Wheel.

You can play Viper Racing on the W95 system with the Sprint wheel.
You can play other games on the W98 system with the ANCO wheel.  Is
the Sprint wheel gameport, serial, or USB?  You could have a flaky
gameport that messes up the Sprint.

Have you patched Viper Racing to 1.1?

Does the wheel seem to behave correctly on the options menu?

Right, which has a PCChips mainboard, and had a Voodoo2 installed before I
moved it to the DFI computer.  (PCChips computer is for our entire family
and son's games, DFI is a backup computer for racing games).

I've put up the Sprint wheel, but it was gameport, having to go through a
Thrustmaster ACM game card after DirectX7 install messed up its calibration
going through the SoundBlaster Live Value card.  What is weird to me is that
I just put up the Sprint and installed the ANKO wheel last week, and the
symptoms were the same with both controllers.  It makes me wonder if there
is a stray file or a Windows setting that is causing the problem, or if
Viper Racing just doesn't like the DFI mainboard.

Yes - symptoms are exactly the same before and after the patch

Yes it does - that's also why this problem is so wierd - it just "loses the
manual shift buttons" right at the green light.  Then I put Viper Racing
into automatic shifting mode to get through a lap and noticed that the
steering was wierd and the lag in the accelerator.

I also tried the latest 3dfx Voodoo2 drivers with no success

Viper Racing controller erratic

Funny this should come up. I haven't run Viper in awhile, not since
upgrading to Windows Me and I'm having exactly the same problem. I calibrate
the Thrustmaster wheel via the control panel and within Viper and the
shifting seems to work just fine. I begin a race and before the light goes
green I can up and down shift. But once the light is green I can't up or
down shift. I can use auto shifting. The braking does not seem to be
affected.

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Phil

Could you have auto clutch turned off and not be pressing the clutch while
you shift?

Dave, I think you have something there. I think I remember auto clutch being
off. I'll check it out tonight and let you know. Thanks for the tip.
