I notice a few people in this group aren't really into it. Fair enough,
personally I couldn't be *rsed with constant PC upgrades so I switched to
PS2 for my *** (driving games third person shooters being my favourites)
some time ago.
Thankfully there are such games as GT4 out there, as without it the best
driving games on the PS2 wouldn't really amount to much.
Indeed, GT4 is the only way I'm going to (electronically) race a group-B
rally car or a GT race car on the PS2, at least until Enthusia.

And there's nothing better than a T16 round some pokey street course. Well,
other than a Maxi 5 Turbo - truly mad kit!

Having said all this, I've yet to find a really good F1 sim on the PS2. Not
sure why, but they're all quite weak for some reason or other.

And at the risk of generating list threads...
My favourite PS2 driving games to date:

GT3/GT4 - not much between them, except GT4 has better tracks.
WRC3 - not got WRC4, but 3 is absolutely excellent for rally.
MX unleashed - V.good dirt bikes, with blend of "just get on and ride" fun
thrown in.
Total Immersion Racing - If you can get past the seriously poor GUI, set the
cars up properly and use a wheel then the racing & physics are actually very
good.
Downhill Domination (bet you lot have never heard of that one) - it's not
great but DH MTB is what I do at the weekends, and a couple of the technical
tracks aren't half bad - too arcade like though.

I've got many, many other driving games, a couple of wheels etc, but these
few are the ones I'd recommend to anyone making the switch...(other than
Downhill D' as that's rather unique to me I think!).

Glad I could oblige!

Mee too. The Historic championships run on mostly modern tyres, so the car
handling will also be very different than that it was when the cars were
raced for real. And having the tracks would be nice, I haven't got much
interest in racing mostly slower-than-GTR cars on the same chicane-infected
tracks.

In all seriousness and fairness, have you tried it?  I can
understand some trying and not liking.  Fine, that's ones choice
and opinion.  But a lot of folk just refuse to consider it
at all, presumably from close minded PC snobbery.  Again, that is
their choice ... and likely their loss.  If you haven't, try it
with a decent wheel (Logi Driving Force Pro, or even the basic DF
feedback wheel).  Take a car like the Miata on the 'Ring.  Or
probably dozens of others you have experience with.  Many
owners and experienced racers say it is convincing.  Take the
Yellowbird Ruf Porsche and feel the responsiveness of the back
end.

The AI sucks. There is no***pit shown.  There is no damage.
Maybe this kills it for you.  So be it.  But there is an whole lot
of good stuff that remains.  And no game (which all of our sims
are) does the rest quite like GT4.

This is the game (they're all "games", even the simulations are games) that
made me trot out on Sunday and buy a PS2/GT4 pack and an adapter so that I
can run it through my LCD monitor.

After running several laps of the 'Ring in my petite Autobianchi Abarth I
popped the DVD of "In Car 956" into the player and checked the real-world
against the game.
Grand Prix Legends - a fixture on my series of PC's since its release - has
finally been removed from my computer and, along with its NASCAR siblings,
consigned to the archives.

I agree completely with your (and many other's) feelings about PC snobbery
and I don't give a rat's arse about the lack of***pit (can you imagine the
work required to tailor 721 different dashboards?!!!), the lack of
intelligence in the AI or the lack of damage.
GT4 provides me with exactly what I like with regard to a racing game:
immersion, entertainment, a whole lot of fun and enormous longevity.

Bruce.

I aspire to own the Chaparral 'D', Andy, and take it around the circuit on
which it won....Nurburgring. :)

Indeed.
I think it's a top addition to *** - the introduction of some of the more
legendary cars.
