I just inexplicably lost about 7 to 12 fps in N4!?!?!?!

And this is accurate as I did extensive controlled testing in both D3D and
OpenGL, full field and test sessions and I am looking at the spreadsheet I
used right now.  Solid, consistent results for about 2 weeks until
yesterday.  I have added nothing to my system.  I have changed no settings.
Same hardware, same software.  The only thing I did was play around with the
oc'ing sliders in the nVIDEA control panel--which seemed to slow down the
game when pushed upwards!!!  Now I have reset it back to "normal" (oc'ing
off) and I have lost substantial performance....??  This is bizarre.

For the record, I gained decent fps by switching to the nVIDEA 6.50 drivers
and DX8.0a.  I was very happy with the performance of my rig--now it is
approaching borderline.  I have lots of RAM and there is no disk activity
whatsoever when using N4. I can't explain it.

I will uninstall and re-install the video drivers, since I have already
tried resetting the N4 graphic config a couple of times...although the
read-out on the black set-up screen looks identical each time.

I am definitely frustrated.  Computers are supposed to be logical and
consistent!

Marc.

Bizzare? More than likely you may have damaged the CPU on your video card by
the overclocking. Once damage, you will be stuck with what you are lucky to
end up with.

Its not meant to be a flame, but that is what has happened and it's no
wonder you've suffered the fps lost.

I doubt that... unless Marc experiences the same thing with different
games...
I have also noticed the frame rate drop after 70 laps at Glen it seems more
like a memory leak issue...
If and when that happens I turn of the lightmaps and gain around 20 fps...
I have the game supplied DX and 6.31 detonators...

But he said in his post, it was AFTER trying the overclock.

I have heard about similar issues when o'cing the 6.50's! Try the 6.31 with
the same setup!

Good deduction, but I am not sure that if the video card was damaged it
would slow down...if its CPU was damaged, you would get errors, bad
graphics, lock-ups, etc.  It may be that the overclocking (supported in the
video card's control panel) set some registry setting somewhere that is now
causing the general slowdown.  I haven't monitored other game's frame rates
close enough to know whether it is affecting them...my system is capable of
running GPL at 36 fps pretty consistently.  It is much easier to tell with
N4, because it doesn't have the artificial cap on fps.

Really--that once you adjust the overclock it does weird things and won't
reset when you turn it off?  I just want to make sure it's that specific.

Thanks,

Marc.

Do you have apply on startup checked? Try uncheck and oc'ing prior to
starting N4...
What card do you have?
