N2K2: thinking of going online

by Peter Ive » Thu, 25 Jul 2002 02:07:24

Hi all,

I've now been pottering around with N2K2 for the past 3 months or so.
Not as much as I'd like, but enough to give me a reasonable amount of
belief that I won't be a moving chicane <BG> and can hold my line when I
need to.  I've got the lastest patch and my times are ok-ish.  ;-)

So, guess what?  I'm thinking of trying a little of this online sport
instead of against those predictable AI racers and I was just wondering
what's the best way to go about it and so I've got some questions.

1.  I've only got a 56k modem here in the UK.  I know it was ok for GPL
and I know how to set it up for a more stable connection, but how ok is
it for N2K2, especially as I would imagine most servers are from across
the pond.

2. I've been racing offline using the Papy car.  Is it ok to do the same
online, or has everyone come up with their own designed car?  Obviously
RASCAR requires this, but what about when you just want to jump in for a
quick race to test the waters?

3. Do any of you recommend certain tracks as those that are less likely
to result in carnage, or is it just the luck of the draw on the day?  I
know I need to race on each different type of track for my LPI ratings
to improve, though.

4. Any recommendations for web pages that contain good info on online
netiquette for N2K2?

Thanks.

Just hold your line and turn the in car chat off.

I'd highly suggest leaving chat one, in fact many leagues require it.

You are thinking about this too much; don't overanalyze it, just get out
there and do it. Start with a good beginner track, like Bristol.

That's what i was thinking. :-) Just get online and have fun. You paid for
the game, that's the only requirement necessary to get online. Join in on
RASCAR. There is a practice session before the race, and you can see if you
feel comfortable there before the race.

BTW, don't turn off chat as someone else suggested, as it can cause a lot of
problems if you don't hear important messages during a race.

Yeah, "%^&*&#) keep up Pete!" means you're lagging back too much while under
yellow. ;-)

Seriously, custom paintjob is unnecessary. You can export an existing, RL,
paintscheme and import it to a blank car which you save under your own name
in the agreed format xx_yourname.cup.car.

I *think* Gerry was kidding...

If you haven't tried it online yet, give it a go. Biggest joke I ever saw.

Of course, if you choose to use the #8 car from the official Nascar roster,
and you enter a race on an open server with it, I *believe* you are honor
bound to jump the start and attempt to boldly snatch the lead with a length
of the field, three-wide charge up the middle.

Well, just to follow up on my own post.  Went online last night and 4
hours later thought I'd better get some sleep.  Good fun and my conn was
decent.  Not much warping apart from one race where everyone disappeared
during practice so I disco'd and recon'd and all was well again.
Connection was to some local/european servers though.  Haven't tried any
US ones yet.

Racing was clean for me.  Was involved in a couple of coming togethers,
but not of my doing where car was spinning about in front of me.  LPI
currently at 34.0 after 4 or 5 races and Rating of 1 for both SW and SS.
Hoping to up that with some extremely careful driving.

First impressions - noticed that speedways and superspeedways seem most
popular.  Tried Sears but no-one else there.  Shame.

Oh well, gonna give it another go tonight, so no need to get any sleep
again, eh.  Race using name in sig.  Hope to see you there.  :)

Do yourself a favor and make up a second ID and use that for open races at
sierra.com. Your lpi is going to get hammered there.

Tell me about it.  Went online the following night and it seemed like a
wreckers convention every race.  Not just 1 but 2, 3 or even 4 wreckers
trying to ruin it for everyone.  As a consequence my lpi dipped from 34
to 17 in one night.  :(

However, it's not my only problem.  I have conn probs as well which had
put me off going online until now, but I just couldn't resist the need
any more.

Since a lightning strike took our my previous modem 3 months ago -
causing me to get a new one which is fine on a friends comp -  my
connections have been very flakey, usually resulting in me having to
reconnect every hour, or even less.  Unfortunately, on my 2nd night's
racing they hit bigtime, causing me to drop out of several races.  I had
been hoping to get my stats up early so as to avoid the pickup races
under a ranking of 3 where the drivers would perhaps be more serious,
but dropping out of races when in the top 5 is rather frustrating.
Also, any lengthy races are out of the question.

I love online racing, but my conn problems are just going to make the
whole experience frustrating, I fear.
