That man is rather insane to be piloting a machine which has no roll
resistance and where he's positioned so far forward from the centre of
gravity that he has no "feel" for the car at all, a critical thing when one
mistake will result in flying (or falling on your side)! At least the other
tricycle-looking vehicles that I can think of, Blue Flame and the infamous
"Bud Rocket", sat the pilot on the centre of gravity!

The overall design is flawed and he should accept defeat and go for a
redesign. The original shape was never even wind-tunnel tested before
building (it was based on nothing but experience and looking at other recent
record breaking designs (before ThrustSSC anyway)!! After his accident in
'96, where he was damn lucky to walk away, nothing seems to have been done
to resolve the problems that lead to it (other than to run the car on less
windy days).

It would be a shame to see Craig get himself killed by his ego. He's a great
man and his endeavours have done much to jump the landspeed record from the
weedy 400mph at the start of the 60's up to 700mph (or whatever, I haven't
checked my records book) by the end. I wish him good luck, but he's going to
need more than that!

Andrew

PS: Yes I am British, but I like all record breaking attempts, no matter
who's behind them

Bruce,

With respect to us Amurricans, I fully agree--as a national culture, we're
hardly demure.  But all in all, I don' think the Brits have a lot of room to
talk in that regard, historically speaking anyway.

I don't have a lot of time for national allegiances, myself.  No flags waved
here.

No offense to Brits meant there . . . in fact, I wonder if it really makes
sense to speak of national traits in this way?  I mean, there's always been
a bunch of 'murricans who found the "we are the best" garbage distasteful.
(Of course here, we get tarred as commies, etc.)

When we accuse nations of being particularly jingo-istic, aren't we making a
rather heavy generalization?

Oh well . . . grumble, grumble, grumble . . .

Good luck to him in his endeavour to win back the "Blue Riband" for land
speed records.
However, my allegiance is with the British and I hope that he fails in his
attempt...in a non-accidental way, mind you.

If there is one thing that gets up the noses of an AWFUL lot of people who
are not citizens of the USA it is "we are the best" rubbish such as this
(snipped from the SOR site):-
"....The team will also be returning the record to America after a 17 year
absence. "
and
".....for a firsthand, up close look at America's soon-to-be record setting
car".

The ability to project an air of quiet confidence is certainly not a
national trait, is it?! :-)

Andrew...check back over the history of the LSR and the designs
developed....particularly those that ushered in the era of "non-driven
wheels".  You'll find that this design is not necessarily "flawed".

How's the Aussie Invader doing nowadays? :)

Andrew

Andrew Hodgso

by Andrew Hodgso » Mon, 15 May 2000 04:00:00

That was my point.

The design is based on previous LSR attempts (i.e. Blue Flame at al). The
problem is that all the previous attemps bar ThrustSSC were all subsonic.
Remember that they never bothered with wind tunnel testing or computer
simulations in the design phase. With a big shock wave under the vehicle,
any instability problems will be greatly magnified. Add to that non-active
suspension and things get ***.

If he breaks the world record in that thing (and good luck to him) he's the
luckiest man alive! I await with interest the running season.

And with equal respect, David, in relation to historical endeavours of an
automotive (and aeronautical) nature, I would say that the Brits have
_definitely_ hidden their lights under many bushels.  Far from being
boastful about the prospect of success they have generally been modest
almost to the point of shyness.
But my previous comments about Breedlove should not be taken seriously about
Americans in general.  More to the point, it was a comment on the brashness
of the man himself......he has never been backward in coming forward, if my
memories of his first attempt are still clear and accurate. :-)

Well, no...I think you're wrong.

Most view Ozzies as a generally laid-back "she'll be right, mate" type who
is mostly happy to let someone else do the hard slog.  I think that
"generalisation" is true.
Yanks are generally depicted (outside their own borders) as loud,
self-opinionated, "American is best" types.
English are seen as a somewhat reserved but extremely polite people who
can't cook.

And so it goes on......and in each one there is a strong element of truth
that relates to the nationality.

Andrew Hodgso

I don't think Gabelich came close to the barrier. His rocket engine lacked
the power and he was running on those salt flats ( I can't spell the name)
which were hardly an ideal surface.

The "Bud Rocket" was supposed to have broken the sound barrier, but they did
not follow the FIA rules (4 wheels or more, 2 runs within the hour, proper
timing gates). When ThustSSC smashed the record, the Bud project leader was
the first guy to whinge about how it was they who had broken the sound
barrier first. Unfortunately, they used a radar at Edwards AFB to measure
the speed which was insufficiently calibrated to give the accuracy required.

Their vehicle was nothing more than a 3-wheel trike with a big rocket
strapped to it. They had a "booster" made from a sidewinder missle when they
found their rocket engine had insufficient power. Supposedly, when they
fired the booster halfway though the run the rear wheels came clean off the
ground. Basically the driver was sitting strapped to a large missile with no
control at all. Whilst I admire his courage, he was just a passenger along
for the ride! This is precisely why the FIA rules are in existence, to
prevent people blasting themselves down the desert with little or no
control!
