Eric,

Sorry to hear your site is no
more. You have been a
generous contributor to the GPL
community. Xoom
did the same thing to Tim Weatley
awhile back.

Xoom has demonstrated what
appears to be
arbitrary, heavy handed and
tactless behavior
towards it's customers by acting
terminate a web site without
warning or
discussion.

Therefore, in my opinion, they
should be blacklisted
by those of us who have been
denied the fruits of
your labor. Let's spread the
word.

It's a damn shame Eric. You have put a lot into the site, the support of
GPL and done much for all of us sim racers. I certainly wish you the
best in your search for a new and more considerate host.

this will probably surprise NO one, but i have heard of this before.
more than once.
is it possible there is someone out there with an axe to grind? trying
to get'other' sites dropped?
as i understand, no PROOF is needed in telling a ISP-  'someone' has
illegal software on your site....just the claim has shut down 2 other
pages i know of.
i believe one for sure was with same as you eric...this sucks
BIGtime. anyone can shut down a site with that mentallity!

and no communication with the management afterwards is accepted.

sounds like a programmed response IMO

Unfortunately that is the mentality that Xoom has, from the overuse of
illegal activity their members has.  It's written in the TOS that people
agree with, but it is clearly un-ethical.

That's why all Xoom member should back up their files.  It happened to Tim
Wheatley also I think.

So what copywritten software were you posting?

It's with anger and sadness that I have to inform you that formely : http://www.simracingmag.com is shut down from the host : http://members.xoom.com. The reason ? Here's the quote :
"I apologize for the long response time.

Your site was locked out for violating the Xoom Terms of Service
agreement, specifically for posting copyrighted software.

Please read the TOS - http://xoom.com/TOS

The XOOM.com TOS Staff retains the right to terminate any account found
in violation of the Terms of Service, and we will not discuss any site
termination.  If you wish to join XOOM.com again, feel free to do so,
but please abide by the Terms of Service."

That basically means, someone have brought a complaint to xoom, and xoom
has shutdown my website, no question asked (to me)  nor any warning of a
violation of Terms of Service. I'm still wondering, what was the copyright
software that really annoyed someone to bring that complaint?

Anyway, damage has been done, and "gracefully" that person is now more
happy with this. He just threw a bomb on my work. That means SRM, SRM Challenge is temporary out of service.

At this point, I'm still searching for a new web host, but it's gonna be difficult :
without the zip files (replays, setups) the website takes : 72 MB as it is right now.
with the zips it's 110 MB more... I have in excess of 225 HMTL pages (part of
the frame format) and countless images.

  Take care all,

Being written in the TOS does not make it ironclad.  You'd have a
pretty good chance challenging in court.  Of course, the cost is most likely
not worth it.  Sucks, really.

Well, the only one I can think of is in the links section :

I was promoting Sierra/Papy by putting there respective logos
and of course there links. As of the rest, no idea. Actually
I never put any software, only links to an external website
apart 1 that is : may be distributed freeware....

This could also be another way from xoom to shut down a website
getting too big...

Anyway, I might be on something else at the moment and will post
development later on.

Not INTENTIONALLY starting an "ethics" thread, but I would think a
company that has thousands of sites they're hosting probably has a pretty
hard time checking into all of them.  Also, since they're hosting is
financially free, they should pretty much have the right to protect
themselves and react quickly.  As much as I personally DISAGREE with their
actions, I would think that it's within their legal and "ethical" right to
yank any site if they feel THEY could be threatened with a lawsuit.  I
personally think it's ETHICAL, it's just unfortunate they didn't even make
an attempt to verify the accusation.

At this point, I'm still searching for a new web host, but it's gonna be
difficult :
without the zip files (replays, setups) the website takes : 72 MB as it
is right now.
with the zips it's 110 MB more... I have in excess of 225 HMTL pages
(part of
the frame format) and countless images.

That's a HUGE website for a financially free hosting service to
host.  Later in the thread you made it sound like not all of it was at Xoom,
is that true?

Homestead allows only 12 megs per site, but you can have unlimited
sites.  So you could create a "home" site with links to any number of
other sites...It used to be online editing only, but you can now dload
their editors.  I'm not sure if you can use other products.

Eric, a solution could be to take a (free)redirect address
like http://simracingmag.cjb.net/  from http://www.cjb.net/
this way you can link up different (free)hosts under one URL
I'm doing the same for my Alfa Romeo pages which are on
three different hosts.

Good Luck and see you back soon,

Try and find a *** sports network that will give you free hosting
as well as unlimited webspace. Works for me...
