Yes but you are using a null-modem, we are talking about dialup
connections with a modem-modem. I can only assume F1GP must
spend more CPU time doing error-correction, carrier checking etc when
connected over a phone line.

As far as the ports go, I doubt GP uses the FIFO of the 16550 uarts,
which would mean no advantages over the 8250.

Anyways I have taken Doug's advice and consider myself lucky :)
