Microprose/S.H. Has No Excuse (GP2)

Microprose/S.H. recently reported company earnings for 1996.  They made
$5.7 million, versus a loss of $9 million in 1995.  According to the
same press release, the company attributes a lot of this improvement to
"the phenomenal success of Grand Prix 2".

If they got their heads outs, they'd go to work on another upgrade, with
support for 3D hardware acceleration.

Please.

If you go too the Videologic site you will see in their list of supported
software
that GP2 will "so it says" be Direct3D compatable. By Microsoft Home.
Have Microprose sold That dog to Microsoft?
What has anyone else heard? Does not matter to me as I sold that game due
to
lack of support and it runs like crap.
BTW- the new 3D card by Videologic and NEC looks to be the best to date.
Go check it out...     http://www.videologic.com/          or....
http://www.videologic.com/prodinfo/titles.htm      For the list of games.

******** Forget it !! it is no longer on the site. Just checked while
typing this********
But it was their last week. No bull.
Guess they thought you can not fix the unfixable.
Microprose sucks.

Believe me, with their far from finished product (GP2), Microprose's
earnings will
certainly mirror that of '95 next year because of their grab the money
and run business practice.
(and they wonder why "pirating" is to the level it is) I personally will
never buy another product from them after Geoff Crammond's so-called
"masterpiece" was far from finished. Do you think the Mona Lisa would
still be on exibit if she was missing her mouth and maybe one eye?! You
dont see any of Geoff Crammond's team in here supporting and answering
tech questions like papy's guys.  BTW thanks Ed and Jeff!

I email videlogic a couple of weeks ago and they said that Microsoft
had purchased the rites to the Direct 3D version of GPII.

I doubt it would be overly difficult to do a 3dfx patch. Even though
GPII is written in 100% assembler it  must still have routines that do
things like
'DrawTexturedTriangle' and
'DrawTexturedPolygon'

if only we had the source code - commented of course :)

You would not beleive how much I agree with you!
Along with A LOT of other people out there, most of us agree theat
Microprose and co. need a SE or something to Get 3d accelerationg
and things like wet weather and the sounds included in the game(the
crew cheif ones)
Common Microprose, if your reading this then someone pinch you to stop
you dreaming of not having to update gp2!!!!!
Happy racing...

Geoff Crammond doesn't have a "team".  He does not work for Microprose.
We've been down this track before, David.
And yes, the Mona Lisa would still be on exhibition if missing an eye and
her mouth....just would have Picasso's signature on it :-)

Ouch!  This means the game needs to be run in Windows and not even a DOS
box at that.

I highly doubt your 100% assembler figure.  If this is true then why is
there copyright information for Watcom C/C++ Run-Time System in the GP2
code?

It would be stupid to write 100% assembler games this size in 1997.
Though knwoing the time GP2 was being developed I think it is a
possibility :) Actually some or all graphic routines might be in
assembler, then compiled with the main C++ code.
As for the performance of these routines, I'd rather not comment like
some who yell it's crap. _IMHO_ (not statring a flame war) Papy's sims
(non-3D) are less graphics rich thus have better framerate. As for 3D
shooters a la Duke or Quake or whatever, I'd like to be able to run in
a city at 300kph to see what framerate I would get in them...
Would have been good to have an MP rep on the ng (or maybe someone
from Crammond's team) - as the Papy's guys do here or the Atomic guys
on the .strategic ng - but I can't blame them for not willing to live
the stress we would put them through:)

Karim

Sincerely, Karim
