I just watched a bit of video on Real Player of the
Mir coming down.  I thought even tho not even remotely
on topic...I'd like to commend the Soviet's for an amazing
acheivement in keeping MIR aloft long after it's designed
lifespan and the apparently safe return to earth..
  Good Job Lads.

A) At least Dave had the decency to put an 'OT' in the subject line.

B) There isn't any personal benefit for Dave by posting this
information, unlike with a certain other offtopic message.

A) I didn't force you to read anything. These aren't the droids you're
looking for. Move along.

B) I didn't know we couldn't post anything if it had any "personal
benefit"! Wow, you learn something every day. Or, at least, I do. So I
guess, then, people should avoid asking, for example, which computer
runs, say, N4 the best, because it would give them an advantage? Don't
lecture me, you paper-hiding weasel waxer.

C) You've got a crush on Wosco, haven't you? C'mon, admit it.

And the crowd sits still as another ill-informed opinion echoes through
the bleachers, drowned out only by the sound of crickets.

The international station has the same life span (5 years).  what's sick
is that it'll take that long just to get it half way done, then it gets
scrapped :-(  At least that's what I heard in one of these videos.  I was
under the impression that it was going to stay up there for 20 years as is
then every so often a piece would be replaced.  I hope that video that I saw
was wrong because it's an overly obvious mistake to build this thing only to
destroy it even before it's finished.

>A) I didn't force you to read anything.

You did, by creating such a vague subject line.
After all, it could have been something like "... a company called
Papyrus, daring to release such a buggy product ...", which would
have been on topic and probably an interesting read.

I didn't say you couldn't (apparently you can), I was merely implying
that you shouldn't, not in an unmarked offtopic message about a
private business decision.

Sorry for not replying to the rest of your most mature comments.

I've seen a report about a company building some air condition systems
for the ISS and they said their gear had to be built to last for 15
years. Not sure if that was including a safety span though.
