I've come across a problem that seems to occur on many different systems
running a SB Live! (Value, Platinum, whatever) and a network adapter
(LAN-ethernet card). The SB and the LAN card may NOT share one IRQ. If they
do, frequent lockups will occur whenever you play games 3D intensive games
(happened with N3, Panzer Elite, Spirit of Speed, MGPRS, Driver...). Other
hardware doesn't seem to care for a shared IRQ, but these two seem to hate
each other very much.

I have a SB Live! X-Gamer and an ethernet card, but the ethernet card uses a
different IRQ (9) than the X-Gamer (10).  However, my usb port (which I
don't use) uses the same IRQ as the ethernet card.  With my freezes, it
appears that the problem is related to the keyboard somehow, as my computer
only freezes when I am using the keyboard.  For example, if I use my
steering wheel in N3, I can race all day long (and have), yet sometimes it
will freeze during a replay when I am using the keyboard.  In addition, it
also freezes when I'm working in autocad, or even using Outlook Express.  In
addition, it also freezes when I play Unreal Tournament, or Half Life, or
Thief, once again, when I'm moving around with the keyboard. I even went so
far as to purchase a new keyboard, but the problem still persists....and I
know it's not a heating problem...

Yessssssssss!!!!!!!! All this time I thought it was my video card. I will
have to change this and see if it works. Not enough IRQs!

Thanks,
Jeff

Mine like to fight over IRQ 9.
The trick to splitting them up is to assign that IRQ to ISA in the
BIOS, then re-boot. This splits them up.
You can then re-enable the IRQ.

It is a really bad idea for ANY sound card and network card to share an IRQ.
Lock-ups would be expected if they did share one.

Marc.

What about a network card and a usb port??  My computer freezes basically
when I'm using the keyboard, and at no other time, and I've already verified
that the other parts of my computer are not on the same IRQ....

I've never seen a network card share an IRQ without wigging out.
If the net card is in the slot next to the AGP port, get it out of
there. AGP and PCI one share resources.
The last PCI slot shares resources with the ISA bus. Don't use that
slot if you have any ISA devices.

Does the last PCI slot share with ISA on all mobos, I know about AGP
and PCI 1, but ive never heard about the ISA bus and the last PCI
before. is this a standard thing on all chipsets, for slot 1, super
socket 7 etc.

I have occasional hickups with my system that could be caused by this
PCI/ISA conflict - sometimes crashes when using cdrom - SCSI card on
last PCI slot!!

i had to do plenty of muckin about to get the sblive and the awe to
work together. (for music)

and i still sometimes have problems with gpl trying to use the awe

It does on both of my motherboards, Colin (an Epox Super Socket 7 and
an Abit slot 1).
If you have a spare PCI slot now, you might have an easy fix.
The Voodoo2 doesn't use an IRQ. Put the Voodoo in there, and leave
slot next to the AGP port open.

I didn't have the free slot, so I put my V2 in the first PCI slot, and
my SCSI card co-habitates nicely with my ISA modem in the last PCI
slot. All I use my SCSI card for is a CDRW, though.

Good luck!

it's not the hardware: it's the SB-drivers ...
I have seldom found drivers/cards that fully meet the
PCI-specifications, so I always use one interrupt per card - works if
you only have 4 cards that need an IRQ - in my case AGP graphics card,
network-card, sb live, isdn-card. with win98 you may have to disable the
use of ACPI (somewhere in you devicemanager under IRQ-Holder ...) to
assign the IRQs within the devicemanager.

every mobo-manufacturer assigns them in a different way ... if you have
a mobo with 1 AGP and 6 PCI, you have to try different slot combinations
until every card that needs an IRQ got its very own one (check with
systeminformation/conflicts in windows). the german magazine c't had a
very good article regarding the "IRQ dilemma" in the latest issue.
